Post subject:  Jimny Spare Wheel Carrier
There are numerous topics on this but I wanted to see if there are other options / ideas for the Jimny rear wheel carrier.

I have 30x9.5R15 tyres and the rear door has a small crack due to the flex from the weight of the spare. So, what is the best option for this?

-Is there a way to strengthen the rear door and lock to cope with the weight?
or
-Best option for a rear wheel carrier (the one I have seen is the Mic Offroad rear bar). Are there cheaper options or others I can look at?

Use a small, light spare tyre and carry a plug kit and compressor. The smallest/lightest wheel available is the 16x4.5 spare used for the X90.

I would do this every time before putting a heavy spare on a back door, or adding the weight of a rear bar/tyre carrier.

Thanks Steve, I was going to just strap the spare wheel in the back but I lose room and also have the rear door looking ugly. Yeah yeah sounds funny.

The full carriers I have seen only weigh in at ~50kg so its not that bad and also incorporates a tow bar. I could then offload my current towbar to someone.

You only have 400kg of payload. Lets assume 160kg for a driver and passenger and 50kg for a rear bar, 30kg for a tank of fuel, and 10kg for the extra weight of the heavier wheel and tyre and you're at 250kg of payload before you put anything else in or on the car. That only leaves 150kg for useful things.

I'm not advocating putting the spare inside, just using a stock weight (or lighter) spare. The likelihood you'll ever need it is so low, there's no point loosing 60kg of precious payload to carry it

hay mate, I have a MIC rear bar, with 30x9.5's, and a 30x9.5 on the carrier.
for the asking price, i cant say i would recommend it. i would love to say i could recommend it, but i just cant.
the welds are not quality, the steel is very week, in fact ive found cast iron with better properties.
the finish hides everything. its a rough powder coat finish that fills the gaps between the tacked sections that look like someone never got round to finishing the welds before it went to the powder coaters. theirs no where to mount mud flaps to. theirs also no where to mount a trailer plug to. theirs also nowhere to bolt a d shackle on for trailer chains... oah, and nowhere to put a number plate apart from in the spare wheel, where theirs no lights for the number plate, as the lights that came with the bar were LED's with 30com cables that arnt long enough to connect to anything...

the good things i can say is, the bar overall looks tidy, it fits the body of the car well, and the tow hitch is well reinforced. it makes the car look huge from the back.

i had to get mine modified to suit my body lift. while i was at the local welding gurus shop, he asked how much i paid (plus transport) to get it here. (i paid 900 in transport alone from sydney to Gove via darwin, and a barge service)
the local welding guru could have made me something much tougher, more personalized, with everything you forget to look for when looking for a rear bar. he could have done it cheaper and it would have been local, so if anything broke, it would be a quick warranty job. but the point is, it wouldn't break, it would have been from real steel, not this 4mm plate that i can bend with my bare hands (and thats with folds in the wings on the rear wheel arches)
if you really want one, ill get some more pics. this is all i have right now

I'm not being a hater, but IMHO in Victoria, at least, that MIC bar would be cop bait. The rear lights are too far inboard and there would need to be some creative mudflap work to avoid unwanted attention from the boys in blue.

that towbar you have might be a good start for making your own rear bar. all ou need is a old wheel hub to chop up and stick some bearings into and you have the start of the swing away.

Luckely, im not in Vic :peaceout:

Thank you for the feedback. It is good to hear comments (For and against). It was a concern for some of the aspects you have raised. I would like to have some form of rear bar / arm. The looks and practicality of something like this is what I am after.

Are there any other sites that offer something like this or do you think I should see a custom fabricator to make something up?

get a custom job, it will look mad, have all the right bits, in the right spot, and make sure that it has the one thing my rear bar dosent, adr eligable tow bar compliance
from the NT inspectors guide, cars will be deinyed compliance when

I will ask around and see who can do what in Townsville. Wish I was still in Darwin as I know the place like the back of my hand and beer goggles ;)
