as i dont have access to my car or a wiring diagram at the moment thought i would throw this one out there untill i get a chance to look at it further. Ive had a starting issue with my vit for a while starter throws out but no crank only does it first start hit the key a few times and off it goes. Thought i would have a quick look at it the other day. A known good solinoid was swapped out no change. Checked voltages at the solinoid and came accross some odd things. Firstly with the ignition on disconnect the solinoid wire and the fuel pump fires into life check the voltage and it shows 10volts turn the key to the start position and itshows 12v back to on and ive got 10v again. Plug the polinoidwire back on andthe fuel pump stops. As i said i have not looked at any diagrams just thought someone may know something or if this is indeed normal??? Oh the vehicle is a 94 1.6 jlx auto |

Normally, the 1.6 Vitara fuel pump only runs for 3 seconds to prime the fuel lines when the ignition is switched on. It starts again once the engine is running. You need a good clean connection at the solenoid for it to work properly. I know on one of my Sierras the spade connection on the solenoid started to open up and make poor connection. Once re-crimped I had no more problems. |

Yep i had prevously put a new connector on its just those voltages that have me intregued as well as the fact that unplugging the start solinoid wire fires up the fuel pump |

If I'm not mistaken, the start solenoid wire connects to the ECU so that the ECU knows when the engine is being cranked - this allows the ECU to disable fuelling if the throttle is held at WOT whilst cranking for what is known as "unflood" mode. I don't know if the voltage measurements are normal, but it could explain the source of the voltage with the solenoid disconnected. |

The signal starter wire also causes the ECU to fix the timing and add enrichments |

Hmm need to get to the car and bust out the multimeter I think unless anyone can confirm this is a normal occurrence |
