I found the rubber matting used to stand on cold wet concrete floors was a perfect sound deadener,
and my feet didn't have to sit in the mud.
Drained dry pretty easily, too.

I want to replace the cloth deadening under the carpet with something water proof, or more to the point, something that won't soak up and hold water when its drowned. I am thinking the sealed cell foam that Clark Rubber sells. It needs to be able to mold to the floor, so mybe there is a better solution. Or I'll just have to cut it to shape myself. Any suggestions? |

They would be sealed cell foam, and hence what I am talking about, but they would be more expensive than just buying a length of what I need |

closed cell foam wont soak up water but it might hold a thin layer of water under itself while looking dry on top |

Wayne I would just remove the carpet altogether and throw in a couple of floor matts that you can pull out hose ant hang up to dry |

I could always have no deadening. I'd kinda like to keep the carpet. Its the cloth underlay that holds the water and takes days to dry. I have it hanging from the roll cage in the sun atm, after hosing it for ages to get the dirt out of it. |

We used to use sound deadening pads in a panel shop, not sure what the proper technical name is (Anti vibration pad?) but thats what we called them. You would see them used from factory on floors,boot floors,inside of door/bonnet and they were a black hard pad,came in 2 sizes about 600 x 250mm or 600 x 500mm and were 4 or 5mm thick. One side had sticky stuff on it,you just heated the glue side up with a heat gun (or hair dryer if at home) and peeled the backing paper off,then slowly stick it to whatever you want and mould it to shape with your fingers. Mould it slowly and keep it warm or it will crack where you bend it. It goes really soft if you get it hot enough. If you look under the boot carpets on alot of cars you often see it around the spare wheel and places like that,but it may be painted,not black. You can usually buy these from auto paint suppliers ,anywhere where they sell panel/paint shop consumables. Probably not at Auto one type shops. |

i used ebay imitation dynamat in my kick panels to stop them vibrating their asses off with 6" speaker in there... worked a treat. Its VERY heavy though, and i imagine its an utter pain in the ass (if not impossible) to get off. |

I have Dynamat in my Jimny quiet as, works great and who ever said it will hold water its pretty much tacky bitumen unless you get water under it isn't gonna go through it. and if you get it under it you installed it wrong. i have it in my wheel arches, both door skins on all 3 doors and roof for the floor i used a closed cell foam from clark rubber for about $40 and 2.5m worked great. just put it under the carpet. if you heat it a bit it molds better. if you get water in your car its either gonna sit on your floor pan or what ever you put on your floor. id just suggest if you get inside wet pull the carpet out and let it dry regardless of what you have covering your floor. If you want something cheap go to supercrap and buy some of the printable bitumen then seal it somehow so your carpet doesn't stick to it. |

I have no carpet. Only had the factory deadening. I want to put some along the tunnel and firewall as well as replacing what i ripped up the other day. I pull my floor bungs out and hose the interior. Thats my water issue, not mud holes. |

Yeah, I have drowned poor Jimny twice before and hosed it out by lifting the carpetthe best i could. This is the first time I have pulled the carpet out completely. I want to clean it well and stick something down that won't hold water and make it easier to clean next time. There will be a next time for sure  I wonder how hard it would be to put a sealed bung through the carpet as well as the floor. Cos, if I can drain from above the carpet, that will minimise what goes underneath it. |

Also have heard of people using Stop Leak in 4x4. You get it from places like bunnings and is like a bitumen / tar with aluminium backing. Mixed reports on it but worth a look for the cost. From what I hear it works well and ill be trying it in my car |
