| Post subject: | compression problem? |
Hi people i serviced my car yesterday and after completion i started her up to find i don't have #2 cylinder while idling. i have checked the spark plugs( switching between each cylinder) leads also switching and dizzy I have spark at the plugs. also i have blue smoke when i begin accelerating after a long engine brake. which leads me to believe my rings are gone. if anyone could help a young fella looking for advise would be very appreciated Jake |

So it worked before you "serviced it". What did you do? just oil? If you think its a compression problem you're best off getting a compression tester. Just a cheap one will do. |

Oil smoke after engine braking is the engine sucking oil past the valve seals. |

spark plug service and oil could it be a sticky valve? |

Could be, but why would a valve start sticking after you change the oil and plugs? Pure coincidence perhaps? |

Sure you haven't got plug leads 2&3 mixed up? |

you havent accidentally knocked a vacuum hose off the inlet manifold have you , because theres a couple of vacuum ports right over number 2 cylinder runner that if you have a split or knock a hose off it appears that its not firing on that cylinder right. |

Yea I tried switching 2-3-4-1 all of them!!! Vaccum hose sounds like an idea I was thinking valve might be sticking Okay so I drove to work at 6am so engine was quite cold but as soon as I got to the motor way and it runs great But as I got to work and let it idle, sad face for jake Driving home tonight great while driving And when I get home also sad face So tomorrow im going to check those vacuum lines Thanks for your help guys |

So what's your logical reason to suspect that a valve might be sticking considering this just started happening after you serviced the vehicle? Accidentally mix superglue with the oil or something....? |

I have a feeling that by "leading towards the valves" he was refering to the valve stem seals causing the blue smoke. |

its also possible that the problem was only noticed after the oil change etc |

Well sorry I just genuinely want to fix my zook and I guess the logical reason would be that I have ask a group higher knowledge people...... for help and advise and I have which was given . checked everything so far and I am now going to check the valves for any sticking ones and check the condition of it under there. I guess this is my "logical reasoning" But please I just want to fix my car so if you know anything I could do to fix my problem, I would be very grateful. Thanks Jake Edit: spelling |

What I was trying to get to was that it seems unlikely that the valves would stick and cause the odd running just because you changed the plugs/oil etc. It's most likely something very simple. I would double check all the vac hoses for cracks/leaks etc as they may have been moved or touched during the service. The engine running odd at idle/cold almost seems to point to a carby issue. Also check the connection to the idle solenoid on the carb. |

yep, everything. The science is that at idle, your carby has the throttle 99% closed, it is restricting the air flow to almost nothing. and this little bit of air goes in, and picks up a little bit of fuel, and this makes your engine just keep spinning at ~900rpm. If you have an air leak anywhere, especially if it is bewteen the throttle and the engine, you end up with lots of air going in the wrong spot (lots percentage wise compared to the little amount of air the engine is letting in on its own), that doesnt get any fuel mixed with it, and you end up with an uber lean mixture. This is one reason an engine wont idle. You dont need much of a leak to really screw up an engines idle. Once you start using the throttle, if you have the air leak, the amount of air being leaked in is now small in comparison to the amount of air the carby is letting in, and essentially the leaked air has very little effect on the engines air/fuel mixture (still has some effect, but it may not be noticable to the driver) One thing you can do if you still cant find it, is get some sort of propelent in a spray can (something like a 'start ya bastard' or even a deodorant can, something flamable). Get the engine going and spray the stuff around where there might be vacuum leaks. if the engine sucks in some of the stuff you will hear the engine change sound or it may even cause the engine to die. this can help point you in the right direction. Remember you are looking for litttle things here, cracks in hoses, hoses that arent on properly, possibly even the bolts that hold the carburetter down might be a bit lose (ive had that before on another carby engine, took me forever to find it). even the pipe that goes to the brake booster, if thatis not on properly this will cause dramas. essentailly any pipe that attaches to the carby (that is not a fuel line) has the potential to have a leak in it. On an entirely different idea, it might be possible that you have a bit of grit in your idle jet in the carby. attack the inside of the carby with some carburetta cleaner (supercheap ~$15 in a can). |

Wow thanks heaps How does that relate to cylinder 2 being to only cylinder that misses on idle. The thing is I an stumped. Cylinder 2 is the only cylinder that's having trouble |

also vacuum hose is only a few $ a metre.. might be an idea to buy some and replace all the hoses secton by section |

Might help to take a few high resolution photos around the carby and post them up. Isnt the brake booster vac line in the runner to number 2 clr inlet valve? |
