Hi,

Was surfing the web researching 215/75/15 muddies (as you do) and a Greek guy was posting http://www.bigjimny.com/index.php/forum/8-my-jimny/47070-iti-s-jimny about adding a switch to enable 2WD (rear only) low range on his 2010 Jimny. Anyone know how to do this?

(search for the words "custom switch to have low range with rear wheel drive" the above link for the quick reference to this feature)

most people who do twin sticks on a sierra dont really find its all that useful so i doubt this would be any different.

but it would just involve figuring out which wire activates 4x4 and which one does hi-low.

then powering them seperatly. shouldnt be that hard to find out

You could also fit a set of free wheeling hubs... Then you got 2lo and hubs that work when you want them to!

Thanks guys, guessing the novelty will wear off rather quickly. The other day I had to drop to lowrange to get on a hoist with wet tyres :)

I used it for a boat ramp on the weekend, many people have both 4x4's and boats that get used on slippery / steep ramps.

I used 4 low to get a 20ft caravan into my neighbour's yard a couple Got it within an inch of the fence all the way.

edit: oops *A couple of years ago.

Their poor old Kia just slipped onthe grass.

I like to use low to back my boat as it is to slow for the mechanical breaks to work and that meant I don't have to remember to flip the coupling lock thing over.

I like to use low because I can't drive and its slower to back :oops:

Uphill its easier on the clutch too

No-one has yet mentioned selecting low-range (if you haven't any reduction gearing) for easy crawling in slow moving traffic jams...

I have reduction gearing and it still works. About the only low range action mine gets :lol: :roll:

I'm really interested in this topic. However, I'm not a mechanically handy person to try this out.

As far as I know, the 4wd system of current jimmy uses vacuum power to release and engage the front standard free wheel hub. Yes, they do have one already so you don't need an after market free wheel hub if you are not taking the car for extreme off road or racing. They do look a bit week than after market one but the full automation is really handy.

Theoretically, enable 2wd in low range mod can be done by simply bypass vacuum mechanism in 4wdL gear. You do need to trick the feedback signal from the front free wheel hub though, because the computer would see it as a failure of 4wd system if the free wheel hub is not engaged.

The best advantage is maybe it is capable of heavier towing in the short distance.

As http://www.jimny-crew.com/jimny-towing-a-camper-trailer.html explained the reason of towing capacity, I think it is capable to tow more, of course correct operation is needed because you don't want to burn your clutch, in some hard ascending steep you may actually use low range 2wd to safely climb up the hill, and change it back. However, you do need to fully stop at the top of of the hill though.

The question I'm still worrying is that weather the chassis is capable of handling the weight in the long term, as I did see some picture of bigger 4wd chassis cracked for heavy towing. Even the chassis is strong enough, what about the exiles, or transfer chain? Our jimmy do use chain in the transfer case and as far as I know they are one of the easy failing parts in the legend?

Hope we can get more story on this topic. I would try it after all other mods have done. Now I'm only working on the bed conversion at the moment. I still believe sleeping in the car is better than tent.
