hey guys (live in WA)
just need some help at the moment
Well I have a 1992 sierra, the back drivers side tyre has a puncher in the side wall and the previous owner bogged it up which is illegal and the spare tyres if faded and bold.
so I'm going to replace the 2 back tyres and use the left back tyre as a spare
I'm think of buys 2 seconds hand Bridgestone Dueler A/T 15 inch 235 75 109s and keeping the road tyres at the front

My questions are:
will this affect my driving?
will it fit my stock standard rims?

Won't affect your driving

Will fit but be a bit bulgy.

Third question to ask is... Is this legal and/or will I be pulled over for having completely different tyre types on the vehicle?

You have not told us what size the originals are.

My front road tyres are 215/75r15
I did ask one of my friends and he told me as long as the same axle tyres are the same it doesnt matter if the front tyres
are different to the back tyres but this may not be correct and maybe someone on the forums will know

tyres have to be mounted in matching pairs, eg same tread pattern on either front or rear axle & you can run 2 different tread patterns front to rear.

Axle pairs yes. But what about sizes differences front to back.

Nonetheless, I reckon you'd be a target for scrutiny if they are obviously different.

Same sizes, just different brands/types.

Do you intend to use it as a 4wd? While the Road Authories are concerned with on-road handling and safety and insist that both tyres on an axle must be of the same construction (crossply Vs Radial) as a minumum for legality, it doesn't allow for the mechanical requirements of a 4wd.

When in 4wd, all 4 tyres need to be as close as possible to the same rolling diameter to prevent wind up in the transfer, and possibly catastrophic case failure. Small variations between tyres like inflation pressure and ply rating can affect rolling diameter, but not enough to create wind up. Different sizes, like the difference between 215/75s and 235/75s will be an issue. Sure, you might take the view that 2nd hand tranfers are cheaper than 4 new tyres, but why not do it right the first time?

Save up and buy a set of 4 tyres.
