looking at having a plan-B backup incase mr police tells me off. going to get a spare transfer case with stock gearing and a second set of rims + tyres. what is the biggest wheels you guys run without gearing? if you are running a G16b then sweet because that would give me a better idea |

Since my 4.9's died I'm running my 30's on stock gears with a g16b. It is bearable on road but low range is a joke. |

215/80R15 on G16a was alright - IMO bigger would be a problem. |

In vic we're allowed tyres 50mm bigger than standard. If you want a set for if you get defected/pulled over for tyres then its probably worth staying within this limit. So really your lookin at 205/75/15 or 215/75/15. I'd think 235/75/15 would be bearable with a g16b but they are about 3" taller than standard. |

The biggest I have had on a sierra with stock gearing is 235/75/15 and with a GTI motor it was horrid. Lowrange was stupid fast. |

Except kiwi has a 2" bodylift, doesn't that mean the largest tyre he can run is 25mm over stock? And I would be more worried about the bodylift than tyres. Tyres are easy to change for a rwc, carbon/polymer body lift not so much. I would think a permanent change to alloy body blocks, borrow the largest tyre you can legally run (205/75r15?) and leave the 6.4 transfer as is should pass a minor defect. |

13.3.1 of vsi 8 allows for 50mm lift + 50mm tyre diameter increase. It doesn't specifically mention body lift but the ruling from the engineer is that its 50mm of body lift or 50mm of suspension lift, not both. |

My experience is probably going to go against everyone elses. I only have standard sized tyres of my own (205/75? R15) but i borrowd some 235/75/R15s from a mate of mine for a 4wd trip up to beerburrum. (100% standard car otherwise, g13a etc) I actaully found the car went better on the highway with the larger tyres (Car with only me in it and a few tools/recovery stuff). The car seemed to like reving lower in 5th gear at 100km/h, and it had no problem going up the gateway bridge in 5th at 80km/h. As for offroading ability, we were only doing light stuff really. dirt tracks and a few bits that required low range, and as far as i was concerned the car preformed great. Of course if i did more serious type rock crawling, mud stuff etc i could see how the tyre size could be detromental, but for what i was doing it was certainly better than the stock sized ones. Its like any modification with compromises, all depends what you actaully intend to do with the car, for some it works fine, for others it doesnt. I think when i buy my own set of tyres ill got for 215/70/R15. About 2% bigger on diameter than stocko, but much more tyres to choose from. (as opposed to ~6% bigger for the 235s) |

215/75r15 are actually 6% larger than a 205/70r15 (stock size). |

Sorry typo, meant, 215/70R15. Actually i think ive got the percentages wrong up there, ill revisit this... I think the 215/75 is indeed 6% bigger than 205/70, but the 235/75 was around 10% bigger. If so i think the 215/75 woudl be the way to go for what i need. |

I was confusing radius with diameter Are poly bodylifts still frowned upon? |

I owned a SWB soft top 92 Sierra with G16B, stock transfer and 30x9.5's for as long as it took to drive from Cairns to Maroochydore. If you aren't doing ANY offroad driving then I'd say anything up to 30's will be fine. 5th gear 100km/h 3000rpm |

John - I have a set of brand new stock Jimny tyres on rims 205/70/15 I think and you are always welcome to borrow those if you ever need them. I kept them for that purpose when I had a warranty but unlikely to need them again now. Mike |
