Ok so you people have taught me loads reading various threads. Even though im loving my zook. It test me as it seems as soon as i sort one issue, another occurs. My G13ba engine is using oil. Not sure how much exactly, but a fair bit. A litre every 700-1000kms at a guess. Runs ok. Does 100kph at 3500rpm. No oil leaks. Doesn't smoke much at tickover and no obvious clouds behind I can see when driving but I haven't followed it. it does smell of burning oil a bit when stop and get out. I assume its rings and rebuild time but was wondering if any other possibilities. I wondered if its worth buying a compression tester to see what the readings are wet and dry which would indicate rings from what I've read. Or just to accept that even though it sounds ok and seems to run ok it's stuffed Any thoughts welcome. Cheers |

You can burn quite A LOT of oil before you will see it in your mirrors. Other motorists will all be saying "Smoky POS". You can rebuild it by boring and adding new pistons/rings etc OR look in the for sale section and just replace it OR start thinking about a G16B upgrade. |

In my opinion that's an ok usage for an old car, I would not worry too much. But plan ahead for replacement, or reco. Give it the best quality oil you can afford, and service it regularly. Oil additives can help, but if you got good performance, no leaks and no smoke, may be unnecessary. Compression test won't hurt, give you peace of mind. |

Cheers for advice and keep it coming if any others have opinions. I noticed after buying it one of the plugs was very black so assumed burning oil. I was hoping to get six months driving out of it at least to identify and fix other things, have done lights uv joints and a sump leak so far. Still need a front wheel bearing, transfer case leak and exhaust replaced. Oh and Fatzook has said he can fit some recovery points for when the inevitable happens. I was dreaming of a G16B swap after that if the 1.3 lasts so I can then tow a motorbike to the track or dirt. The zook would be a perfect vehicle then. Sadly I think the skills involved in that are beyond me at the moment and getting it done looks like major expense. Anyone paid for this and had good results or have you all done them yourselves. |

Carby G16, though not as good as EFI, may be a cheaper and easier option. |

New her & need help.Have 1997 Sierra coily G13ba engine.Have had the engine rebored .20thou & honed, new pistons, Rings(Chrome),bearings, head has been recond by shop new seals etc, new plugs & leads, has been run in with running in oil & replaced after 1000klms with normal oil & 4000klms latter was still burning 1lt oil per 1000klms. Have pulled it back down & checked everything Replaced with new rings (chrome) & checked correct positioning of Rings on pistons.Could only get ring gap down to 16 thou after checking 3 sets of new rings (2 were Hastings brand) ranging with ring gap of 25 thou to 18 thou (all chrome rings).Had bore size checked & it came in where it should be.Re honed bores,New PCV fitted (old one was ok).Ran it in again with running in oil & still going thru 1lt per 1000klms after 4000 klms. Compression on all 4 cylinders is 180 psi. Can see small bit of blue smoke on changing gears but not Hugh amounts but smoke not noticable when cruising. Can smell oil when pulled up.No oil leaks.Seems to have a bit of blow by thru cover when hose removed. Any thoughts why this could still be happening.Cheers Phil |

Was bore ovality checked? |

Question for you - when the block was bored, did the machinist have the pistons on hand? Did he/she measure the pistons before boring or did he just bore to a set dimension? The factory manual I have shows the ring gap as 0.20~0.30mm, which translates to roughly 12 thousandths of an inch (which is what "thou" means to me) maximum, so if when you say 16 thou, or 25~18 thou, you are referring to thousandths of an inch, your ring gaps are way oversized and that means either your bores are larger than they should be, or you're using the wrong rings. Factory spec for piston to cylinder clearance is 0.02~0.04 mm what do you have? |

Bore was checked with gauge by another machinist on 2nd pull down, original Machinist had pistons when he re bored engine, pistons were measured & were 20 thousandths of an inch oversize. When motor pulled down 2nd time ring gap was measured & was 18 thousandths of an inch. These rings were replaced with 16 thousandths of an inch gap rings as they were the smallest gaped ones I could get from 2 different manufacturers for G13BA engine pistons 20 thousandths of an inch oversize..On the Haynes Suzuki repair manual it says that excess end gap isn't critical unless it's greater than 0.040-inch(40 thousandths of an inch)?Piston to cylinder clearance was checked by second machinist & was correct. Running in oil used is Penrite Running in oil. |

Throw the Haynes manual away. The variance in ring gap spec between the Haynes manual and the FSM is proof enough. Were the cylinders bored with a deck plate installed? |

Just one last question... Piston to cylinder clearance was checked by machinist and was correct - correct according to the machinist or correct according to the manual. |

at the top or all the way down the bore? its common for the bore to ovalise and be at its worst in the mid stroke. I'll almost guarantee this is your oil burning issue. these engines need to be either bored out massively (120thou or more) and with a torque plate fitted or re-sleaved |

Mechanics here are saying that it is the chrome rings not bedding in,where can I purchase from Molly or steel rings for this engine as all I can get here are chrome rings. |
