I have had this problem for ages...thought it was the alternator but wasnt. changed the carby...helped but it still wont idle sometimes and when its idling it pulses / surges...could it be the fuel pump?.

try cleanin the idle jet out, and then fit a secondary filter AFTER the fuel pump, but before the carby.....
spray the bejes' out of these two with carby cleaner, and give it a few good revs...
The put a filter like so...

Interesting... it would be worth doin a run down (with pictures) on what you removed exactly and how you blocked things off.. im sure life would be ALOT easier without the anti polutiuon gear.
