Hey guys, Auto Vitara. I've had some starter problems in the past. Mainly that the vit wont start at all (doesnt crank). My mechanic had a look at it about a year ago when it was there, and he ran a bypass to the starter, with a relay and inline fuse. Starts every time now, however, what I found is that every now and then, it does that grinding noise (like when u try and start the engine when its already running). Thought my starter was on the way out, so i swapped it out on the weekend, only to find it's still doing it. I am thinking that maybe its getting a double signal from my current relay 'fix' and the original starter wiring. However, there's only one wire running to the starter solenoid, and that's off the relay. So not sure here... Is there any recommendations on how it should be run, and why its doing this? Thanks guys. |

The problem is most likely the ring gear on the flexplate. 4 cylinder engines always stop in one of two positions so those two spots on the ring gear cop a workout and once worn a bit will grind occaisionally. |

Mine does it occasionally, but usually a quick flick of starter and next try it works fine. (probably moves it off the worn bit) I run the original starter circuit and a bypass relay. Works fine most times. |
