Im doing up a 1983 SJ40 and was draining the oil out of the sump and two springs came out from what I can tell is there locating springs for the drive shaft? Does anyone have any idea on this?? Need a solution ASAP I was going to take it apart tomorrow and try and relocate them any advice?? |

im having trouble uploading one, one is about 2.5mm in dia and the other is about 1.75mm and about 20 - 25mm long |

so they're small? i don't really know sierra transfer cases that well but they sound like they're detent springs for the shift linkages. someone with sierra smarts should be along shortly, you will either have to resize the images to attach to the forum or host them on photobucket.com or something similar & post the [IMG] codes. |

Yep that would be the springs you are looking at. Can you select 2 Hi, 4 Hi and 4 low? |

I can select them (I think) sort of hard to tell not being in the car if you know what I mean like the slector moves and drops in to place but yeah might not be going in properly whats te best course of action? |

They'l be the detent springs if they're actually from the case. If it's a non-switch case (no 4wd light switch at the base of the shifter) pretty much everything is different to a normal Sierra case so triple check everything is the same before you order parts. You can drive without the detents, it will just be likely to jump out of gear. Does it noticeably click into gear when you move the shifter or is it sort of vague? |

Yeah no switch. Well ive sourced a gear box which was going in tomorrow but then I drained the oil to put new stuff in the transfer case then came across this...what should I do? |

If it is out of the car it is easy to tell if it is going in gear. Spin the input and see what the outputs are doing. If in 2wd only the rear will spin, 4wd both will. In high range the output will be spinning roughly the same speed as what you are turning the input and in low range it will be noticeably slower, over 2 revolutions of the input for 1 revolution on the output. Check your shift pattern, if it is stock the detent ball is still in place if it is all over the place than it is not and you'll have to open it up to properly reassemble it. |

Put the new gearbox in. Try and source another transfer or open yours up and find out what's going on in there. If the springs have come out there is either 2 loose detent balls in there or they have come out in a previous service and no one has cared |

Which "hub" is which e.g 4 hi 4 lo etc im only new to this and young haven't done anything like this before |

The two on opposite sides of the gearbox are the outputs. This is where your tailshafts go down to your diff. The one that is offset is the input, this is where the power from the gearbox comes in. The front of the transfer case has two flanges, the back only has the rear output. People will answer you in good time, no need to bump a tech thread when you haven't got an answer after half an hour. I have no idea if it will last. Like sideways said, it should be fine but it will probably drop out of gear while you are driving it. Considering you are young, I would try and find another transfer. You sound like it is your first car the less on going issues it has the better. Non switched 1L cases shouldn't be too hard to find. There is one in the getting rid of stuff section now I'm pretty sure. |

Hey John, if you decide to split your case I can scan the relevant section of the service manual and send it to you. I've pulled mine apart and rebuilt it but it certainly helped to have the book to refer to. |
