IM looking at replacing all the non winscreen windows in a jeep to Lexan.

Anything i should watch out for.? also does anything know a cheap hookup or at least what a good price is?

Polycarbonate is what you want, lexan is brittle and can shatter

Aren't they one and the same? i.e. Lexan is a type of polycarbonate?

I know what you are saying though. I have had lexan in drag cars before, but a drag car doesn't get knocked around anywhere near as much as a 4x4. Perhaps acrylic would be a better choice?

Sorry gotta bit mixed up. Lexan is a brand of polycarbonate.

There would be different grades.
I'm sure the bullet proof stuff would cost a fuck load.

yes, its also 12-16mm thick. the point is its not fragile

Definitely not fragile. But it's not particularly "bendy".

Compared to glass it is superior in almost every way, however (price being the most obvious difference).

It scratches very easily and if on a road car can cause issues with road crash rescue

Its for the race jeep (unregisteres), it wont be on the drivers door or passenger door so no issues with crash rescue.

Poly scratches VERY easily and will be so bad that eventually you won't see clearly through it.
Check out old boat windscreens.

Yep scratches easy. I bought a front poly window for a sierra few years ago.
was about $200 so quite expensive. Destroyed it by putting my window wipers on.

Lexan is used in many offroad cars.

I think i saw the V8 super cars peel their windscreens off a couple of times during Bathurst.

Polycarbonate isn't very UV stable. We found this out with the trolley tug, which had polycarbonate flares for a while until they pretty much exploded from UV exposure. There is coated product which is better but IIRC it's only coated on one side. There is also product with a scratch resistant coating, again, I think only on one side. The scratch resistant coating adds quite a lot to the cost too.

Window tint film is quite scratch resistant, so some light film on the inside will help if you use scratch resistant polycarb with the scratch resistant side on the outside.

Just some thoughts. Poly windows look pretty rough quick in a car that goes bush.

paid $280 18 months ago to replace the sides and rear window on the Sierra, didn't really shop around so could probably be got cheaper, scratches very easily, the rear is about 4mm or so and is held in by the rubber seal and is quite solid, the sides were only about 3mm and the way they mount means they flex a fair bit.

just get some clear UV window tint solves the UV problem and its clear so you can see through it

we wouldnt be swapping out the windscreen any way. only the 3 windows down the sides and the rear tailgate window.

alot of the reason we considered it is weight. 30 kgs of glass up that high is a fair bit.

we might just pull it out and have thin plastic sheet to press stud on and keep the weather out.

I used the clear stuff on the top to let some light in and the grey on the sides.
