I've just had my steel tray sandblasted to remove the spray can paint job and the rust thats popped up where the paint rubbed off. I'm painting the tray properly this time, but want to protect the floor best way possible as it ended up with quite a bit of surface rust last time. Whats going to be the best way? i wanted to put marine carpet down, that would stop paint being rubbed off, but my concern is water getting underneath and causing rust. even painted with penetrol (rust killer/preventative) and quality paint, will this be an issue? is there a better option?

no, im not interested in debates over how marine carpet looks on trays. i like it and dont care if others dont. either way im more interested in practicality so I am open to ideas...

Looks notwithstanding, the trapped moisture would start to brew a good batch of rust in no time whatsoever.

Spray on ute liners that form a membrane is the way to go. Carpet over that will reduce your likelihood of rust

The rubber matting isnt much good to me since it doesnt have sides. Spray on ute liner might be the way to go, i was concerned about how abrasive that will be on anything that gets put on the tray, another reason i like the carpet idea. Never thought about doing both... I just dont want to be having to deal with rust again in a year or 2, hence why im looking for something to protect the floor other than just paint

What is the product exactly that your using?? I would be interested in doing the same, and does it dry completely and not remain tacky??

I've got marine carpet in the LJ, it's pretty abrasive. It's rubbed the paint off and definitely holds water. I wouldn't use it on a tray.

Hey guys, it's a product by a company called Gripset.

It's about $20 for 1 litre from stratco and that did one good coat on my floor and most of my wheel arches.

It's basically a bitimous rubber and so far I have not found it tacky. It was for a couple of days but I find it ok now. I'm also going to spray it with paint when I paint the body. Ran a couple of sample sections with paint and the membrane and it seemed to be fine.

This stuff is used in rain water tanks and other areas so there are no fumes once it dries and I hope if it was used for rain water tanks it should be fairly stable with heat.

It can also be thinned down and sprayed if you have the right gun.

Also I brushed it on with a paint brush not thinned.

I then just dabbed it to give it that textured finish.. Not sure why but it looks better

I'd be wary of putting carpet in if your expecting it to get wet often.

I'm planning on painting mine with ute liner through the tray and foot wells. theres a couple of brands around at various prices. hippo liner, raptor etc can google them. Pretty sure you can get different colours too if black doesn't suit. Roughness of the liner depends on how its applied.

Update: After reading the advice on here, I went and looked around at a few stores for ute liners. ended up going with a product called 'dupli-color bed liner'. I bought it from supercheap in spray cans for $23 a can. from memory its meant to be able to cover 15 square foot, i used 2 cans for my tray. turned out excellent. Not tacky at all, not rough or abrasive either. I'll comment on the durability in a few months... but im pretty pleased, especially considering the price
