Post subject:  anyone running 38dges webber on a sierra? need some help
so cracked the shits with my 32/36 webber and decied to upgrade to a brand spanker!
old mate at the carby shop talked me into the 38/38 dges! runs fine at idle and whole fuckery its got some balls!
full noise 1st gear is fine
2nd is fine but towards the top end of second (havent checked exact revs)
and defiantly full pedal third it starts to chug then basically loose power (same as if the car was running out of fuel):/

just wondering if anyone knows what jets it should be running

read a bit on the net saying webbers like to run with about 3-3.5psi so its good to run a fuel regulator
does anyone know what the mechanical pumps (standard) put out?

Did the bloke at the carby shop supply the ones that are currently in it?

What about upgrading to a stock Sierra carby or even better efi.
Personally I'd be taking it back and getting my money back.

Webbers were great and then they invented fuel injection. :)
You'd be better off with a vitara carb, wire up the choke and off you go.

Well a webber is only going to work well if it is tuned well.

Meh I ran a weber for around 3 years on the old donk. Never had an issue on road. How long have the rest of you sheep run yours for before you gave up? ;)

I ran mine for about 2 years and only got rid of it coz I got done over by a dodgy carby place. If you spend the time to learn how they work they are a great carby.

I agree, I had a pair of twin throat 45mm side drafts on my 180bhp Daty 1600 rally car but that was thirty years ago and the weight loss program that car was on to achieve 250 kph, was phenomenal. Now days you could almost do that with a hot hatch out of the box from the factory while listening to your iPod, though I doubt that what ever you're listing to would sound as good as the Webber intake noise of a worked L18 at 7500 rpm. :D

i ran a weber on my 1.6 (32/36 DGAV) and it ran spot on until the linkages wore out (about 2 years). The cost of having them replaced was about 1/4 the cost of converting to EFI...

I went EFI.

The 38 is usually sold for 1.6 motors and tuned 1.3s. even so it sounds like it needs properly re-jetting to suit your motor. Does the car shop have a dyno?

Edit: you will need to get the fuel pressure set properly before you attempt any tuning.

the only car i've heard that sounded better was a twin webber twin cam L18

38s are a great carby, once tuned for you engine, you will not touch it again, they go like stink hey.

Its hard to say what jets, like what engine, ignition, any head work etc then what are you looking for, moving to bottom mid or top end ?

The losing power does sound like a fuel loss problem, filters in good condition, pump working well ??

Have you removed all the crud from the inlet manifold under the carb ? stock they have two holes, cant remember, bout 24mm and 28mm, set for the stock carby, very restrictive when upping carb size, if that hasn't been removed, rip the manifold off, take the carb off, with the adapter in place, run a texta or whatever around the inside base, take the adapter plate off, and remove whatever is inside the mark you placed, this will give near twice the inlet size. This will make for a much better performance above what you have now.
