:D Hi Guys :D

I have purchased a ORA lift kit which comes with replacement pan arm rods, radius arms, springs and shocks i was wondering is there a certain order to put the gear in to make your life easier?

Also i was wondering if there was many gearing options on running some 31" or 32" mud tyres (other then replacing the jimny Tcase for a sierra)?

That's the best option for gearing as jimny tcases r weak

Basically no options without building a custom front axle housing.

It would seem you can get 4.556s

Sierra transfer swap is the most cost effective (and arguably outright most effective) option.

For that size of tyres u can get the trialjimny gears.

A sierra tcase would be better but ud need some reduccion gears in order to run those tyres. Plus depending of the model jimny u have u might would need to buy some more parts rather than just the tcase and mounts. So price would come close to the trialjimny gears. But as others said sierra tcase are stronger, plus if u have gears on it u will have a massive low ;)

I have a 98 jimny rear air locker, OME 2" lift kit (slowly changing it to the 4" ORA kit :) ) and running cooper S/T 235/75/15 (want to run 31" or 32" ).

Jimny_timmy runs 21% reduction gears on 30s and its no where near low enough for slow stuff. ($1200)

I run a sierra case with 4.16 gears on 31s and it nearly low enough for slow stuff.($500-$1500)

And your only other gearing option is APIO gears ($2000) which has a decent lowrange but nothing unachievable with a sierra case.

But your in luck cause the 98 G series jimnys are the easiest to work with reduction wise.

And as an opinion, your going to hate changing CVs with 32s. If you can get away with not locking the front and running 32s it might last on rock, but still won't be as capable as a twinlocked jimny on 235s.

well i guess if i do brake my CV's ill just have the twin lockers with 235's

32's break stock driveline even without driving rock.

Post subject:  Re: Jimny Lift and Gearing

what will i need to do to run 32"?? i read that massive thread which you and 31zook were kinda debating (constructive criticism) how did you both end up working which was the best to run the custom 21spline(31zook) or running 26 spline if possible?

(sorry if i sound retarted or stupid asking all these questions i have only had a suzuki jimny for about 5 months and trying to learn as much as i can plus its the first car i have ever owned still on my p plates)

Just stating the obvious but IMO you should consider trailering your car everywhere rather than driving it - P plates and really big tyres are going to get you noticed in Queensland.

i know i was only going to use it for weekend warrior tyres because i have a full time job and have only really sundays free. oh and there is heaps of tracks like beside my house soo i am willing to take the chance. :)

Why do you want 32's again? Is it just so you can say you are running 32's? Or is there some sort of whacky terrain where you live that would see 32's actually add some capability (rather than take it away)?

Post subject:  Re: Jimny Lift and Gearing

well the is a heap of tracks that me and my mates go through and i have to get pulled out by my friends sierra which is running 32" and a 2"body lift and he hasn't had a problem with CV axles etc. even when he took it up to cruiser park and i just thought of doing a simular rig just a jimny and yes i know pretty much ever part on a sierra is like double as strong compared to a jimny

What tyres and lift are you currently running that required you to get pulled out by the sierra? I'm not trying to troll you here, I just think that (at the expense of sounding like another 30-something party pooper talking down to a P-plater) your requirements with regards to capability could be met with smaller tyres with a suitable tread pattern along with a light sprinkling of lift, lockers and driving ability. This would (or at least could; I don't know your local tracks) actually be a more capable and infinitely more reliable rig.

As 31zook says, it'l be more capable with smaller tyres and lockers. The cops wont hassle you as much, you probably wont break as much stuff and you'l show up tons of bigger tyred vehicles that don't have lockers which is always fun. :D

Sure, it wont look as hektik driving down to the shops but that's not what you want big tyres for, right? ;) .

Henno i am running a 2" OME lift kit and some Cooper S/T 235/75/15, cut guards, rear locker, Arb bullbar winch(front locker in march) etc.....
im planning on using the coopers for daily driving tyres and the Km2's for weekend warrior. and yes i do understand it is a bit over the top running 32"s but if you are hung up on you diffs there is no point of a locker :l correct me if im wrong (not trying to be a smart ass i dont have a front locker yet to know the answer) :( just always getting hung up on that back diff. :(

How does 235's cope with standard diffs, axles , and cvs?

never snapped anything yet (touch wood) it struggles a tiny bit but ill be putting a sierra transfer case in soon aswell. just get hung up heaps which makes me feel lke i wasted money for that rear locker. :|

My brother bought a 97 model 2.8 diesel dual cab hilux for 15K. Bought some 35s, then I welded his front diff, put histeer in, notched the sump, extended brake lines, bearings, UNIs, RUF, rear IFS springs and a stereo. Then he jumped it, ran it flat out and low on oil, leaking power steering box, brakes didn't work half as good, low on power, and not as comfortable as his girlfriends captiva. Last but nor least, decided to drive it into a puddle and hydro lock the motor. So then he had a lux with bad brakes, no power, crappy steering, oil leak, used heaps of fuel and was rough as guts to drive. So he sold it for $1500 because he could afford to repair that which wouldn't of probably broken in the first place.

Moral of the story, a running car is the only type of capable car.

32s will be fine. If you have the cash/talent to pull it off. The cash to buy chromo's, gears and tyres. The talent to fit it all properly make sure the tyres aren't scrubbing out on the head light bucket. Fit correct length bump stops and shocks, pull your diff apart and change the side gears, fit gears correctly to the Tcase and then fit it all correctly to the car, to change wheel bearings every 5-10k, and last of all to drive the car well and know how to not drive in the ruts like a pootroll flat cap hero.

Im not having a go at you in anyway, im just letting you know that you will spend most arvos in the shed spinning spanners rather then wheeling if you choose to do this to your first car.

If I was you I would save my pennies and buy some 235s and get some help fitting a sierra case with 4.16 gears in them to your car. Been done a heap of times and doesn't require much effort to fit. Don't even need to guard chop!

Wilso.

Xmoretrollsthanataricollects

People think (before they build one) that a car with big tyres is just their stock car looking cool. They don't realise it takes the car from a no-nonsense driver into an ongoing project. Use drops, you won't take it on the same trips or drive it where you used to, and it soaks up more and more money.

It's cool if you know that going to happen, but it surprises lots if people. It surprises people even more when their fully hektik car gets out driven by something almost standard with the right driver in it.

Lots of good advice above, a wise man would take it all on board. All the people offering it are just trying to help you save lots of money and time.
Remember this, the driver is the one that gets stuck, the car just gets the blame. :)

Thanks for all the helpful information i really appreciate it :) i just dont really have any hobbies anymore (full time apprentice chef now)dont drink or do any drugs. i just love the look of a jimny and thought it would be a fun and easy(compared to GQ/GU/Cruiser) to learn some basic 4x4 mechanics and make a little tuff truck rig. also dont really have anything else to spend my money.
