Hi Guys, So i have a very weird situation. I have a 2002 jimmy, with manual gears, no buttons for engaging 4wd. It has started behaving badly. On 3 separate occasions now I will be driving on the motorway at 100km/h. Incidentally it feels a lot harder these days to get over 100km/h than it used to. It feels less powerful. At 100km/h i am sitting bang on 4000rpm. This issue does not happen all the time. When it first happened i felt a slight shudder, then two seconds later another shudder. I checked my revs and it had dropped from 4k to 3500 when that happened, and jumped straight back up. then a pause of about 10 seconds and then it rapidly started doing that. It felt like the car was breaking, shuddering. I noticed the transmission light rapidly blinking, and i started to pull over. As i was slowing down I could hear the noise, like when you engage 4wd, as if it was repeatedly trying to engage. Knock, knock, knock knock. I then pulled to a stop, went into neutral and it stopped making a noise and the light stopped. I popped the bonnet and there was a sizzling sound coming from the right hand side of the engine block. I let it rest for a couple minutes, then with the engine off i tried all gears (1 to 5). I then turned on, and in neutral engaged 4wd, then low, then back to off. This seemed to fix it, and I was able to drive the remaining 300km home without any issue. I then regularly drove the car during the week, until 2 weeks after that event it happened again. I did the gear thing again, and it went away. Then last night a large truck fell in to my slip stream and it suddenly kicked in again. Pretty scary! I have asked a couple mechanic mates and none have ever heard of this happening. I wondered if anyone else had. I have it booked in next week to be checked over. Cheers |

so have you done a transfer swap in it? what about manual hubs? sounds like its always in 4x4 high, and the hubs are auto engaging??? |

Havent swapped the transfer, I dont have manual hubs either. When I normally engage 4wd High or Low i just need to use the small gear stick. |

Pretty sure someone recently had a similar problem, might have been jezza in the NT? |

I had a similar problem that I'd get a whining like you were in 4x4 but without engaging it on the transfer but as severe as you are describing. Atari had a good idea that was to drive without the auto hubs and see if it happens, which for me it went away. Turned out the auto hubs were stuffed so changed both out for a set of manual ones. |

ahhh that might be the one i was thinking about, just had a search of jessa's posts & he had drama's with the vacuum lines coming off... |
