Post subject:  upgrading alternators

Hi guys,
89 wt soft top 1.3 sierra
Alternator out of 91 22r 2.4 hilux

Same brand alternator, plugs, mounts, pulleys and alignment, just a bigger body and about 80 amps I believe.

In the el falcon alternator thread they say to put a big wire straight from the output of the alternator to the battery. Now on the stocker is this the black wire off the top post that dissapears into a loom of wires underneath the battery area?

If so can I just leave that wire unplugged and free and run a new one off that top post of the alternator to the battery positive? Or should I follow it to wherever the hell it is that it goes and remove it?

Or can I just plug the new alernator straight into this wire? Or will it fry it?

Cheers fellas

If you leave that wire in place make sure you tape the end and preferably find the other end and disconnect it - you do not want to short that to the chassis.

Ahhh - if you don't already know the answer to that, should you be attempting this conversion?

The output lead from the alternator (the one that connects to the stud) is wired to the battery positive usually via fuse or in the case of a Sierra I believe it's a fused link - it would take me less than 10 minutes to find the other end of that cable if I had the car in front of me.

Find the battery positive cable (not the one to the starter) and follow that - you'll find the other end of the alternator cable most likely at the next "junction".
