Hi all

Its been awhile since i have posted on this forum but i still refer to the site regularly.

So I have been doing a lot of offroading in my Jimny over the past 18 months and have been loving it.

Ive just completed my third trip to the Vic High country with my friends and the jimny performed great except for one problem.....I accidentally jumped it. Now i am running a nice camber

After cleaning it and doing an inspection I am sure i have bent the diff. I guess now I'm looking at my options. 1 Buy a new housing and rebuild. 2 buy a complete unit a swap. 3 maybe try to straighten it?

any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Well basically it was getting late in the afternoon. After a lot of driving trying to get to a camp site where we were meeting other friends, for whatever reason i missed one of those man made humps. my mistake but not deliberate.

So diff housings can be straightened?

yes, but is an involved process.

On my silver coily, the front diff housing is bent enough for it to be visibly noticeable. It's never been a problem and it's been that way for at least 100,000km. The tyres wear slightly unevenly (only just noticeable), but not as bad as some IFS cars without camber bolts.

IMO if the camber is only just noticeable don't worry about it. There are heaps of *fully sik* drift cars getting around the streets with loads of negative camber.

Also, stuffed wheel bearings, kingpins etc, can give the illusion of a bent diff/negative camber.

oh ok. I would like to fix it. I have another issue that arose at the same time. When the front diff is engaged it drives the same but when i apply the brakes there is a grinding noise. the noise sounds like a brake pad that has worn out (metal on metal) but only make the noise in 4wd and is fine in 2wd. There is no noise under load, it only occurs while braking on the drivers side.

That sounds like a bearing problem and needs to be investigated/fixed promptly.

Yeah i thought bearing myself. Its strange to only make noise while braking in 4wd

Well its going on a mates hoist tomorrow i think, so we will investigate.

Ive found a diff housing from a 2003 jimmy. Are they then same as 2010. $295
Or a complete disc to disc from a 2009 Jimny $660
Both require delivery from sydney to victoria

Drag chain round the diff tube under jack and back up around the other diff tube
Wind jack up till diff straight

Mates had to do this to their Sierra every night at the first outback chalange

I work as fitter/welder and that same thought crossed my mind.

Ive just put the jimny on the hoist, definitely a bent diff. Its bent on the weld rite under the drivers side spring mount.

So I've found a housing from a 2003 jimny. Are the 2003 housings differnt to 2010? I guess they are because of the push button setup in the later models.

Cut the weld and do it again with a bit of heat and it might pull back straight

I have no idea if all your gear will fit the older housing, but if I would have to guess I would say that it will be fine the push button is for the transfer case, not the diff the front hubs were also vacuum, but they are on your spindles anyway, which would swap on from your old one along with the 3rd and axels.

I bent my 1L front diff like a banana after a massive jump, $150 later with a new housing and a struggle with a winch and a sledge to get the old axels out and it was good as gold again.

Thanks. Yeah i am fairly sure the housing will be ok from the older model. i found one in sydney that I'm getting sent down. courier is $125 wtf?
