'04 SWB SQ420 Grand Vitara - located upper driver's side kick panel in case it isn't obvious. Covered in sticky electrical tape and spliced into something; previous owner never noticed it.

Any ideas wtf it would do? Does it nuke the Russians?

got a alarm fitted, looks like a override switch, eg if the remote doesnt work, you hold the button switch ignition on to kill the alarm.

It's not OEM so it could be anything.

I used a switch like that to control spot lights once.

push it :P

No alarm that I can see. Maybe it had one in a previous life. I just don't want to be stuck out in the middle of whoop-whoop and not be able to start the car because I don't know the correct morse code for the button.

For now I guess I'll just do what I do with unexpected boners: tuck it back and hope for the best.

Trace it back and see where it goes. I hate alarms that 'don't work' anymore, cos they usually start working and leave you stranded when you don't want them to. If there is (or was) one, get it out.

Look like the button off those cheap black box immbilisers that did the rounds in the late 90's / early 00's.

Well, I got home (I was out and about when I took that original photo) and after getting out a torch and taking a look at tracing the wires, after about 1.5 seconds this monstrosity literally fell out on to the pedals (and nearly whacked me in the face in the process). It was/is attached to nothing whatsoever, just swinging in a vine of wires under the dash:

And complete with a wire going nowhere (which I can only assume is the aerial for whatever-the-fook this thing does.

Definitely an alarm. Get rid of it. Rejoin any ignition wires if they're cut

Edit: looks like a budget Mongoose

They just had this on Pimp My Ride, it controls flames that come out the exhaust.

I think I actually bought Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's old car and it's come pre-wiretapped courtesy of the Australian Government.

the pair of black wires with their own plug, thats the immobiliser circuit, cut them at the plug and join them together, the rest will be tapped into the loom, just snip em where they tap in

Mine has same button on my dash, near the flashing LED for the immobiliser/central locking.
Always wondered what it did, have pressed it many times :)
Glad I didn't use it for something else.

I used to know everything,
I now know more than everything.

Yeah, looks like one of the asio tracking devices.... Wrap in it tinfoil, and lead, and you should be right. Maybe wear a tinfoil hat for a while, just in case.
