Post subject:  Auto Hub Bolts Keep Coming Loose?

Hello,

The left hub on my SV620 keeps coming loose. Every few 4wd trips i'll start to here some seriously concerning noises every time I turn in 4x4, and it is the hub bolts that have all popped out. When I bolt them in again, it's works fine.

Whats making them pop out all the time, and how can I keep them in there? (I thought loctite, but there is too much grease in the threads). Also, it is JUST the left hub, right never causes dramas.

Cheers.

Here's some pics.

Thank god for the plastic casing, otherwise I would loose the bolts every few weeks

This time two bolts stayed in

My mistake, the right side was loose too, far from coming off though

Spring washes maybe?

You could use locktite, just have to wash out the holes and bolts first.
But as above, try a heavy duty spring washer, first, and torque wrench to specs.
Dip the holes, to see if you can use a slightly longer caphead bolt, as well.

Just make some washers with locking tabs.

There is clearly something amiss, but as suggested above, I would be inclined to swap to hex head bolts and use some locking tabs.
"Stage8 Fasteners" Are a great product. Not the cheapest option, but impossible to vibrate loose.
When your hubs are not clearly visible or obscured by a cap it could well be a worthwhile option.

total worst case scenario, but you could drill small holes through the heads of all the bolt and pass some wire through them all =) that'd stop them twisting out.

Are you sure the bolts are the right size for the threads? maybe its ever so slightly undersized and that's the issue?

Thank you all for you input, I think split washers are the go, as I have heaps of them. I have already put the hubs back together, so they will have to last the glass house trip tomorrow.

And so will this....

(Found a massive tear in the CV Boot, no idea how long that has been there)

Got some old push bike tube and zippy tied + duck taped it on

Loc tite is a bad idea in my opinion.
I started using anti seize on mine.
Hub bolts are a known weak point and can break off, but are an easy track side fix.
But if you loc tite them, you will never be able to remove the broke studs in the bush.
Hub bolts do come loose, regular checks is wise.
Spares is wise, too.
I bought 60 series studs with nuts for mine, off ebay.
Newness is better than the 20 year old bolts that were breaking and coming loose..

Spring washers, or swap to an AISIN FWHs which use the cone sleeves and spring washers.

Definitely say no to loctite on hub bolts.

you could always drill a hole thru the bolt heads and wire them together its called twitching i think ive seen it done on race cars and on aircraft parts stops the bolts from rotating out

Hey that's pretty smart. Not sure if I could be bothered though hahah. Might just stick with split washers haha

That would be the go ! To try anyway, but they ain't cheap (genuine I mean) I had 2 60 series cruisers and lost a few of them as well so still not bullet proof.
I have never seen them come loose tho on my vit...
Try spring washers and see how that goes.
