| Post subject: | Tried extra oil to improve gearbox life? |
A few months ago I got my gearbox rebuilt cos it was noisy in 3rd and 5th and had a few other niggling issues. Went back in and it was much quieter, but occasionally after braking for a corner I noticed the same noise in the box when accelerating again, almost like part of the box was temporarily starved of oil, and now it seems like the noise in 3rd is just starting to come back, although not nearly as bad as it was, so; - Has anyone else experienced this issue? - Is it worth trying to get some extra oil into the box? (This was a fix for Lada Niva gearbox issues). - Is it worth putting an additive into it, and if so is the Nulon one suggested in another post still worth trying? I used the recommended grade of gear oil and it's Caltex brand so hoping it would be half decent. I have an oil pump to fill the gearbox thru the filler plug, pretty sure it was filled at least to the filler plug level. Thanks for any input. Mike. |

Try using Penrite oil. If that doesn't shut it up then add the additive |

As a general rule I would advise against putting more oil in a gearbox then is recommended. It 'could' put extra strain on your seals and blow them out if you put to much in but I do stand to be corrected if gwagen has a better idea |

I ran Castrol synthetic gear oil and Nulon G70 in my Jimny when I was a courier, which saw roughly 1500 gear changes a day. It never gave a peep in over 100,000 k's. My first experience with G70 was in my combo gear box, before I got the Jimny, it started making noise so I added G70 and it shut up for another 10,000k's then spat the main shaft through the end of the box, through the clutch into the fly wheel. Since then I swear by the stuff and it goes in all of my gear trains. |

I put this in the swift http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?product=50204 I wouldn't of said there was anything wrong with the box before but its a lot lot quieter now, its not cheap though. |

I use vmx 80 and an additive in my gearbox as it developed a noise soon after I bought the car and its been quite ever since.my car does 60km a day |

Thanks for all the replies, I will try the G70 additive for now, and look for some better gear oil for the next oil change. |

Just a reminder that you need to use the additive every time you change your oil...40.000 k's intervals |
