G'day all you zookers

I've got a 91 soft top g16a (carbie) vitara, I've only owned it for a month now and not sure if it's revving right

At idle it revs at 1500
At 80kph in 5th gear it's at 3000.
Any speed over 80kph and my fuel just drops dramatically

Can anyone lighten me on this situation, do the revs sound right or do I need to adjust ?

For a 1.6l the fuel economy is not great, the exhaust is stuffed and needs replacing

As for idle speed, the auto choke on the carby is probably blocked - easily fixed. If you search on here you will find instructions to fix it.

About 3000 rpm at 80km/h sounds right. A manual 1.6 car by vit does about 3200rpm at 100km/h.

Normal fuel consumption for a carby vit is 10l/100km - give or take about 1l/100km.

seems about right for a 1600 but the idle is high.. check the choke ... i get about 320 to 350 ks out of a full tank

Thanks guys I will check the choke on the carbie and let yous know how I go

I did take it on the highway for an hour and at 90kph the vitara was revving at 3200rpm. That doesn't sound too bad then right?

SWB vitara with manual and 5.12 stock tyre size is 3500rpm @ 100kmh or so I've found.

80kmh there is a lot less wind resistance than there is at 100km especially for our flying brick Vitara's.

Choke is an easy check. With a cold engine remove the air filter so you have access to the top of the carb. Look down inside and you will see the choke flap. Start the engine and allow it to warm up to operating temperature whilst watching for the choke flat to slowly open. If it fails to open at temp you could could have either a blocked coolant line or a dodgy choke mech. The second is usually the case.

If it does turn out to be knackered and you cannot source another carb for parts you can zipty the choke open. This is far from ideal but is a lot better than driving around with it on at operating temps.
