I need to make a cam and a follower piece to mechanise my Aisin carby. A pair of tiny little parts - looking to get them cut out of 7 or 8mm stainless. A pic below gives the basic idea.  Just wondering if anyone knows what it'd cost to get something like this CNC cut? Both of these pieces would fit on a 50x30mm piece of plate. I'm guessing it'd take maybe an hour to mock up in a CNC program, and a few minutes to cut from there. |

you could always try to get handy with a grinder? =) Another option, make a mould and cast the parts out of resin to get you by until you can get metal ones made? |

I was thinking about it, but the drilled holes need to be perfectly square. I'd need a drill press to pull that off. I wouldn't mind swing past a CNC shop and seeing what they charge, seeing what they do, etc. If they charge like the light brigade it might inspire me to get my own hobby CNC router for projects like this (which are always popping up). |

Lol - double edit bust  I'll wait for the CNC quote. They're simple little pieces but accuracy is critical. I've got a 100% accurate/scaled pic to use now, and all measurements have been taken... I wonder if they can just scan it in rather than mock it up themselves?

If you can get it into .dxf format that will make life easier for the operator and a Cnc company will be more willing to do such a small job if you can give them the drawing in a file they can use. |

Thanks for the help Pyrohamish. I didn't realise this needed to be drawn up in a CAD program first. For some reason I thought the parts were drawn up in programs like Mach 3 BobCAD or Shark, but an a-ha moment I realise this software only controls g-code. This is something I want to learn so I might have a crack at myself first - i'll get in touch if I give up and crack the shits! I've just downloaded Draftsight so hopefully I can get my head CAD. |

Che, you can use Adobe Illustrator (free 30 day trial on the website) and draw it using the pen tool / circles etc, then export a DXF or DWG file. That's probably the most straightforward method, and there's tons of tutorials on drawing in illustrator (or you can come over my house and i can show you how to do it). |

Done.  Draftsight seems super intuitive to use. Now to work out what type of DXF to save as - there's about 15 different options in the menu. I'll wait til I know what the CNCer wants I guess. |

just save to the earliest version... the newer ones always open the older ones and not vice versa. |
