Does anyone have any knowledge of such a beast? Basically, I have a fishing kayak that I want to add a small GPS unit to, but it'd be handy to also be able to use this in the car. It's main uses will really only be for marking waypoints for reefs/logs while in the 'yak and tracks/POIs while offroad, not (really) for navigation.

I don't really want to spend more than a handful of hundreds, so $1000+ units are out of the question.

Ideas?

Any Garmin that will record a track log and mark a waypoint will do, you dont really need to run a marine map for a Kayak I wouldnt think.

but like all GPS threads I would be inclined to just find an app for it, especially that can run open street maps, they show a lot of 4wd tracks already

It needs to be water proof (resistant) though. Phones are not. I mean, I could buy a water proof phone, but that is more than the cost of a standalone GPS unit.... and 'round and 'round we go!

That said, I do own a couple of Nexus 7's (one old and one new gen). Let me ponder this further; there must be a waterproof case and mount somewhere.

Recently brought an etrex cause I had money burning a hole in my pocket... and I lost my phone which i was using previously.

The Etrex does NOTHING better than the android based phone I had previously.
Maybe slightly easier to load various maps and tracks on. and battery life/AA bat's

Everything else, screen resolution, general ease of use, option to play solitaire when I can't sleep, doubles as a torch, timer, etc etc the phone shits all over it.

As for water proofness. Ortlieb has your back... very proven products. As do many others.

otter boxes are like 30 bucks
their waterproof. then theres glad ziplock bags if your uber paranoid.
i take my boat 70K from home to places where id be dead reckoning if it wernt for my phone.

i literaly trust it, my compass and my 25W VHF with my life, and trust my phone first. and over my VHF.

may have over read that part. yeh the note cases arnt totaly waterproof but mines seen a few decent splashes.

South side (Manly) so I'm only really 800m from the water, which is handy. The local creeks are good for an arvo bash if I'm happy to catch undersize flatties and bream here and there for shits and giggles. The girlfriend's family live at Coolum and my family are on the Gold Coast also, so that's rather convenient. Although I really, REALLY wish I had the 'yak with me at Straddie over the new year. I am yet to have a go at the fresh stuff. I desperately want to catch a bass, and then drag it up north to the folks at Gladstone and try and land a barra.

I'm paddling a Moken 13. All standard except for two Cannon rod holders and a Humminbird fishfinder. It's a heavy beast at ~32kg dry and 4m+, but I have no trouble moving it around and it is far more capable and better suited to my type of fishing that the little 2.7m ones I'm used to. The trolley is a flippin' godsend though. Here's a pic of it completely empty from my other thread:

the further you go downstream the better they taste, but theres less of them. freshwater from the dam they dont taste so great but they'd tow you round good

Although I'm not too concerned about how they are on the chew as I'd be throwing them back anyway. I am far too paranoid about eating any Gladstone fish at the moment - yeah, yeah it's only the harbour blah blah - but it's more for the sport than filling my freezer anyhow.

2 year old crabs are the size of 5yrolds and tasty. competitive exclusion means no cadmium in mr crab too.
its a 47 year old refinary designed when polly and advanced floculants didn't exist. it was designed to use starch from potatoes as a floculant.

it is also by no means the worst performer environmentaly in the industury.

Just got a galaxy note3 lastnight. makes google maps look like a live satilite feed, and you can catche maps on earth and use the gps for navigation.
still think a phone in a bag is a good option for ya.

I want to be able to mount it though (as free hands are an absolute premium on a kayak) so the bag option isn't exactly ideal.

Also, my nexus 7 is ~$200 to replace and much cheaper than my phone, so I'd be less annoyed if I destroy it. That said, I think it'll come down to whether/what cases are available.

$179 at Whitworths but possibly cheaper elsewhere. I just follow the large compass arrow to the spots where I drop my craypots. Its simple and works well for that. I find that method far easier than trying to watch my position on a screen map. I don't use it for any form of 'routing'. Mine's nearly 10 years old. The current models have more features and are cheaper than back then.

You can get waterproof sleeves that the screen still works through at any outdoors shop, combine it with a universal tablet mount off ebay and you are set

Please tell me... (I don't have a GPS app on my phone). Will a GPS app let you mark a waypoint and then let you return to it later by following a pointer arrow on your phone?. (Like you can on a marine GPS)

I looked at a "hard case" type one today at Jaycar. The other outdoors shop type ones were the "plastic sack with silicone screen" type which aren't easily mounted. The good news is the Jaycar one is well rated (6m depth rating = 5.9m more than I need!) comes with a few mounting options (for suction cups) that should be easy to retrofit to a deck/gunwhale mount. The bad news is that it was $89 for the case, which with mounting and other bracketry brings it very close to 'standalone unit' pricing.

Not a bad idea, actually. Although I might invest a little more in the "bag" to ensure it can handle full submersion. I've had more than my fair share of waves entirely over the whole 'yak, not to mention if (read: when) I eventually tip the thing. It's only got to last a minute or two dangling upside down in the drink but you can never be too safe and all that malarkey.
