I replaced my vacuum hubs a while ago and blocked the vacuum hoses. Everything has been working fine for a year or so. It was fine a few weekends ago when I was using it last and all I did in between was clean the car down.

I had to use it for work today to access a site up near Marysville (Victoria). I found that I had a flashing 4WD light. I checked the vacuum hoses, pulled and prodded everything but really did not find anything wrong. After doing that the light stopped flashing. I have a few questions.

1) If the vacuum controller has got itself out of sequence is there a way to reset it.
2) Is there a way to short circuit this controller (which only seems to have one sensor on it) to make it think the hubs are always engaged effectively enabling the removal of the whole vacuum system. (or will this cause a problem disengaging 4WD)

The actual case isn't activated by the vaccum system at all... ie. the case doesn't start changing once the vaccum system says its activated or vice versa.

So I can't see theis being a problem.

However the light will also flash if the case doesn't engage properly, but unless you've pulled you case apart, the only reason it would do this is if the 4x4 switches on the case shat themselves.

I reckon you have a crack in one of the hoses. Costs about $3 worth of hose and half hour to pull each piece off, cut it to length and plug it all back in ;)

Thanks Timmy. I don't think it was associated with the case as 4WD was engaging fine. I agree the vacuum hub system seems to be independent of the transfer case actuators. I suppose my point is I can do what you suggest but why not just remove all this stuff and its no longer a maintenance issue? There is the vacuum canister under the right hand guard which will also need to be looked at one day.

where did you block the vac lines? on the left and right at the swivel hubs or on the downcommer lines from the engine bay?
perhaps their no longer effectively blocked.

Jezza, I blocked them on the downward sections just after the metal pipes. Cut both rubber lines, inserted appropriate sized threaded rods and then used self amalgamating tape over them. No obvious leaks but that is always a possibility. I am thinking that the vacuum sensor switch might have been stuck. It came good after I poked and tapped all the lines including that sensor. I guess I will wait to see if it happens again.

^^^ try looping a piece of the rubber tube between the two steel pipes... That will eliminate any chance of a leak there

This is hard to explain so i will do my best.

Below the battery is 2 Vacuum Solenoids that push / suck air, you will be able to find it from all the little hoses that are T'd into each other. The Solenoids have 2 hoses that head down and towards the Firewall and you will see them pushed onto the hardlines where they go down and under the car to the axles, Try block them off there?

Otherwise the vacuum controller has packed it in or one of the solenoids have.
