I finally got one of the moth balled sierra's on the road for my Mrs to learn to 4wd. The car was originally bought as a parts donor so I don't know it's history. The right front tyre has severely uneven wear with one shoulder having 10mm of tread while the other has about 1mm. I took it for a drive around the block to see if it had any wobbles etc but to my surprise it drove dead straight. I found when I got back to the shed the bottom king pin had some serious movement which gave some nice race camber. This explains the tyre wear. So I fully rebuilt the knuckle from the swivel seals out. Can anyone shed some light on the two following issues that have come up afterward. 1. After putting the free wheeling hub body back on there isn't enough of the axle spline hanging out to get the split ring on. Any ideas what would cause this? Also is it dangerous to drive it like this in 2wd? 2. Now everything is rebuilt and there is zero movement in the knuckle or wheel bearing the bloody thing is getting the wobbles which it didn't have originally. I doubt it but can this be the result of the above missing split ring? Otherwise I figure with the uneven wear the tyre would now be riding on one shoulder, could this be the issue? Cheers, Hybrid |

The cv just needs pulling out so you can get the snap ring on You need to check over everything in the front end now. Make sure the wheel bearings have no play, check all spring bushes, steering joints etc. |

There's a thread cut in the end of the CV. Thread a bolt into it and you can pull it out far enough to get the clip on. Lots of people leave them off to make trackside CV changes easier. Did you set the king pin bearing preload as per the manual? If not, that'l probably be where your problem is. |

Thanks for the suggestions guys. In my rush to finish the job yesterday I didn't check the alignment. I thought because it tracked straight with that much movement in the knuckle the alignment couldn't be too bad. Turns out it had 20mm of toe in! I fixed that up this morning and she's driving great. Turning into corners a lot nicer too hehe. |
