Hi all,

1st off, not the biggest car buff. Attempting to change out the clutch on our Sj410. We have purchases a H/D clutch. Any things to watch for whilst doing this? I.e sticky situations and easily preventable mess ups? Whilst we are at this mini mechanic attempt, is there any other generally good ideas we should possibly also take into consideration? whilst we have half the car all over the shed floor?

Any tips would be appreciated! Other wise we are just going to use the manual we purchases (normally ends up infuriating so we throw it to the side!).

Cheers.

Some of the 1.o have some flimsy spring clips holding the thrust washer in place,
it is easy to lose them, and they can fall out easily when worn.
Best to replace them while box is out.

get the flywheel machined and replace the spigot bearing in the flywheel , do the rear main seal , replace the water jacket cover gasket on the back of the motor and use some good quality sealant on it , or buy a new water jacket cover , they are prone to a lot of corrosion at their age .. also depends on why you are replacing it and how much work you want to do , but replacing the front seal in the gearbox is a good idea , unlike the 1.3 g/box you cant just remove the housing and replace the seal , its a gearbox apart job and while you got it apart you may as well replace the ball roller bearings they arent that dear . the needle rollers on the gears rarely give any trouble ...

inspect the clutch release arm for excessive wear and also the release arm return spring .

if its just worn out and you want to be tight then just replacing the clutch is ok but not ideal , if its oil contaminated and slipping then you need to rectify the underlying problem or else a new clutch will slip in the not too distant future ..
