hay guys I've got my self a 98 jimny and was after some ideas on what and how I can go about upgrading it, in order to make it an awesome off roader. I would like at least 2inch lift but am wondering what is involved with getting a 3inch lift. Oh and what is available to me in the way of engine upgrades e.g. info for engine swap to 1.6L and 1.8L.

Ps guys your opinion on what is over board or unwise is most welcome!!!

the best thing you can do is drive it. its easy to see what you need first by just driving it
more aggressive tread can be good.
up here thers lots of mud, big deep bog holes. i have a bit over 150mm of extra height from tyres, body lift and suspension, but i havent found true need for lockers yet. others swear by lockers.

so go find something you cant drive, take pics, (we love pics!) and we will tr to figure out how you might be able to drive it, or what would make it easier.

Before asking for mods, what terrain do you drive that you need the mods for? 
Are you likely to hit a roo or do you need a winch because you like getting bogged by yourself? = bull bar
Cant get up bumpy hills? = locker
Cant get up slippery or loose surface hills? 2 lockers
Camping by yourself? = drawer system
Camping with hot french girlfriend? = roofrack
Need to talk to other people? Uhf

Oh and as far as overboard goes, the 3 inch lift is overboard.
Note that a lift is not mentioned in my list above at all, but a 40mm lift is probably as much as you want in a jimny, though a lot might dissagree, in most cases I belive a big lift is just for looks and poor handling.
My Jimny and my 1L sierra were both 215s with no lift and were perfect for what I was driving.
My twin locked ruf 1.3NT on 31s was lifted about 40mm, but was very diffent terrain and kept up with much bigger cars.
My current build is a bigger build, 50mm lift and 33x12.5s planning to drive through the jungle and up a volcano, then move back to Melbourne for some real 4x4ing..

I agree with neo.

I came on here asking lots of questions about mods etc and got some excellent feedback on why I should do some and why I should not do others and so my build is always changing from what I originally had in mind. On top of that I do a mod then go and try it out to see how it handles and what difference it makes. Each time I cant do an obstacle off road I try to figure out whats stopping me, think of a mod that might help and ask lots of questions.

The best advice I received and applied was not to be concerned with lift. As was pointed out - suspension lift does not give you ore ground clearance on your lowest points - only bigger tyres will do that. To fit bigger tyres you can just trim out the guards and again as neo says if they rub, bump stops, if they still rub trim more and only if you really need to you could go for a body lift (I am running 31's on my 99 Jimny and I bought a 2 inch body lift and have not needed to install it to date.

I have found the rear ARB locker fantastic and makes a real difference when you cant get grip climbing either a loose or slippery hill (loose rocks or clay) and it has got me up things easily where before I was just spinning wheels.

I think approach and departure angle can be looked at improving through fabrication of your own bar work.

If you run on your own like I do and chances of getting stuck are moderate to high then a winch is the easiest method of self recover. Spend the money on a good one not a cheap 4500lb one as you should be aware the rating of pull is dependent on how many layers of rope are around the winch so the given rating is based on the first layer of rope - hence I went with a 9500lb runva winch which will still be pulling way ore then the weight of my car when all the layers are wound on.

Invest in some quality recovery gear.

A led light bar is great if you do alot of night driving and want a broad area lit up - also have a think about where you will mount it to avoid damage - I mounted mine on my bonnet so I can see it and navigate it away from the path of branches etc, it is quickly disconnected and put away when not needed via a waterproof quick disconnect plug.

On really steep hills I have found the gearing not to be optimal and I have strugged on a few so I have a sierra transfer case ready to go in as soon as I put some reduction gears in it I believe this will improve alot.

With all the mods so far y car still handles perfect on the road and is very capable off road.

Because of the larger tyres I have a set of JoeBlow custom axles ready to go in and also a rear full float kit which will mean that I only need to carry one set of spares for everything and also will mean easier track side repairs and servicing.

out changing the cpu but i dont know whitch one :/

There's only one 1.6 GV motor. However a coil pack Baleno motor will work just the same.

Check out my build thread! Ive put a 1.6 vitara bottom end in, bash plates to avoid smashing things and make it easier to slide over rocks, 215 at's. At the moment im building up my axles and basically rebuilding everything and plan for a snorkel and 2" lift

In any case, OPs questions have been answered. I just found it humorous (after owning Joel's ultimate LWB sierra for a short period) that he now likes the sierras better again, after Jimny ownership.
