All LJ81s are 0.8l. The 1l was never factory fitted to an LJ. Stockmans were still F8a powered.

The bellhousing pattern is different but the whole gearbox bolts in. There's 2 different bellhousing patterns for LJ50 engines, something to be aware of if you're buying a gearbox. There's a wreckers near me that has 2 gearboxes, one of each bellhousing pattern.

You'l need some random other bits like the oil bottle and throttle cable. The LJ50 Instrument cluster would be handy too.

The only way you'l find a good engine is if you import one from Japan or buy a whole running LJ50. No one has good motors just sitting around. New crank bearings and conrods are practically impossible to get so rebuilding them generally isn't an option. 4WD_products sells the crank seals now though. Top end rebuild kits are readily available though.

LJ50s are also geared significantly lower, they have 4.88:1 diffs (vs 4.556 on the LJ80) and a 1.714/3.013 transfer (vs 1.526/2.571). With the big tyres you want to put on it and LJ80 gearing it'd be damn near undrivable.

Personally, I'd go the other way and put an F10a in. It makes it a much more usable vehicle. I can comfortably cruise at the speed limit on highways and carry a lunchbox without losing 10km/h off my top end. Sure, the 2 stroke is awesome but having a cruising speed of 70km/h isn't.

Verm1n has a build thread were he's put an LJ50 motor in his LJ81. Search LJ51 and you'l find it.

Yes may sound strange to some downgrading but i really like the sound and smell of the 2 strokes and I'm in no hurry when i drive my LJ. my search for a lj50 soft top in reasonable condition has been going on for 3 years + now with no luck.. i just want to know if it will mate to my 4 speed gearbox and mount up the same? has anybody done this before? my LJ is the earlier 800cc one, "78 .

No it wont match the gearbox you have. The internals are the same but the houseing isnt.

yeah as sideways said there were no 1 litre ones from the factory. i can possibly help with gearboxes, bell housings, and engine parts if your chasing them

I think i will just go the other way and upgrade to the 1Lt down the track and just keep searching for an lj50.. possibly get one imported from japan, I've seen some pretty nice ones over there with all the cool aftermarket parts they have. surprisingly mine can go to about 130 kph if i hold it flat for 30 seconds- a minute or so from 90 on the highway..
