Post subject:  Jimny Gearbox/Clutch problem
My 2005 Suzuki Jimny VVT is having a major issue. I drove into town and just as I got to where I was going it all went wrong. I went to gear down from 3rd to 2nd to pull in. Clutch pedal was all the way in yet trying to put it in 2nd it started grinding. Pulled over instantly and took off, no problems. After leaving the place I just got around the corner and had to gear down again, same exact problem for 2nd. It only does it in 2nd and when gearing down, not up. So I ended up driving 30mins home with out gearing down, just neutral and braking. It has been to the mechanic because of a lack in power and I had the clutch adjusted about a month ago, no problem until now. It has had a knocking noise that I can feel and hear from inside the cab. I couldnt find the knocking problem and neither could the mechanic. Anyone else heard of this issue or experienced it? Can anybody tell me what the likely problem of the grinding is?Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like ur Syncro. Mine crunches a little from 1st to second but only when hot. When cold it is perfect. My have to change the oil.

time to lean to blip shift like i do.
heel on accelerator toes on the breaks.
match your revs and youll only need a clutch for taking off in 1st and stoping in gear

it will take some practice, luckily i learnt in my old corolla not my jimny!

I was halfway to taking my car to the mechanic when I turned around to go home as it was no longer happening. Took it into town an hour later for about 4 hours and it didnt play up at all in that time. Im going to replace all oils in the car anyway so hopefully it doesnt happen again. Thank you both for your suggestions and help.

uhhh check you clutch fluid level.
sounds like air in a hydraulic line to the clutch preventing your peddle movement from fully disengaging the clutch.

^^ But Jimnys have a cable clutch. Has this changed in new models?

How many kms has this Jimny done? It may need a new shift sheet/bush.

This bush, is it an easy job to do. Could be whats wrong with mine...

And mine has a cable (2006 VVT)

My cable had a terrible grinding noise and the clutch pedal arm was knocking from side to side as well. I had to remove the steering wheel shaft, then the pedal assembly and the cable of course. I sprayed a boat load of lanoline grease down the cable as I shuffled the inner wire back and fourth to work the grease through. I shaved a couple of nylon washers down to remove the play in the pedal pivot shaft and added some white grease. Both fixes worked a treat.

No not hard but you'll need to pull your interior shift boot apart to get to it. I've not had a VVT shifter apart but it would be much the same as the earlier model. Below is a VVT shifter with the interior boot removed.

EDIT: The bush may be broken and there's a bit floating around in there which could cause gear selection issues. Usually this would be a high mileage type issue.

Why was your clutch pedal arm knocking from side to side? Why did you need to remove the steering shaft?

There also should be a bush that slips on the end of the lever. This is the one that caused me grief.
