Hi all; knowing that the aw4 is shared across jeeps and toyotas, is there an option for a shift kit in the suzuki i.e. you just use a toyota or jeep kit?

thanks for any input, a search of part numbers hasn't led me to an answer, i just know they share some/most internals...

And to be clear, AW-4 variants/architecture are shared. Toyota make their own versions, for example. They’re not all interchangeable.

Chasing some firmer shifts. I've had stage 1 and and 2 kits in gm autos, noticeable difference in characteristics between the two. Just want to see if anyone has info.

What exactly do you mean by "firmer shifts" ?

I assume dude! wants that high line pressure "snappy" shift feel. Which, if I'm right is a byproduct of higher line pressure used to hold the bands harder. It's not an end in itself.

Personally, I'd imagine offroad, harsh shifts would promote loss of traction.

Is the transmission flaring between shifts?
Is it slipping under load?

There's plenty of upgraded valve bodies for XJ AW-4's but some brief research has shown parts between the Vitara AW-4 and the Jeep AW-4 are not 100% interchangeable, so the VB's might not be. Plenty of XJ owners add power and their cars are very heavy. In the suzuki application the transmission is incredibly unstressed.

No flaring when shifting. They're just slow soft shifts. I plan on getting a trailer at some point for camping. Typically a basic "shift kit" adds to longevity when towing. Plus I've only noticed an increase in driveability with upgraded autos.

An AW-4's outlast vitaras comfortably. They're massive overkill for a 1.6. I'd put a temp gauge and external cooler on it and forget about it, but if you really want increased shift speed, enquire with the XJ Cherokee shift kit vendors to see if anyone has used one on a Suzuki AW-4. I have a feeling the VB will be different though.

I have no complaints with the speed mine shifts, but I accept its under lighter load than in a Vitara which will speed up the shift.

MV automatics in Adelaide do a shift kit for the Vitara AW4.

You can buy shift kits for them. or you can run spacers in the collectors that do the same thing.


However the easy way to get a firmer shift, is to pull the Kickdown cable out and clamp it which increases line pressure for all shifts.
