31.3% reduction depending on accuracy of rpm figures. auto transfer is supposed to be a 1:32 in high so pretty close. interestingly makes me question the accuracy of the percentages of the TJ gears. the 20% tj set mony had may hav been a 27% set instead as you have the same end rpm

What makes you think that? The engine will be operating closer to it's maximum torque output thus becoming more efficient.

my thoughts are because the faster your engine revs the more air it sucks in, compreses and blows out. the gearbox makes the required ammount of torque get to the wheels
if your maintaining a speed you require a set amount of torque to maintain that speed.
if you can get that required torque figure at lower revs with thesame ammount of accelerator peddle, then your more efficient.
to me the proof is in the accelerator. when out of gear the more you press it the faster the engine revs because your putting in enough fuel to overcome the additional in-efficiency of revving harder.
obviously on the go move too far down the torque curve and your puting your foot down further and geting less for it, the engine cant use the extra fuel.
quick test for me with standard vvt gearing, manual, and 30's, is keeping my foot on the accelerator in the same spot in 5th, and flat shifting down to 4th. if i go faster in 4th with the same ammount of fuel (accelerator) then i stay there.

if the car is labouring at low revs in a gear is going to have to work harder and use more fuel.

i agree but just because your under 4200 rpm doesn't neccicearaly mean your laboring the engine.
with 13% increase in gearing from tyres as long as theres no headwind im better off in 5th at 100kph
with a headwind im better off in 4th at 100kph. (which in itself is a 19% reduction from 5th)

Unless there was more than just cosmetic changes in 2013, I'd expect the difference is 27%. We have discussed in other forums that the reported 1.32 figure is incorrect.

The chain in the auto is 5mm narrower, so expect that it will stretch more quickly.

Considering that I wasn't getting 300km from a tank and I couldn't pull 5th at all I reckon my car will be a lot happier.

Low is awesome, crawls really well.

The only people who don't think gears are the go are people who have never driven a low geared car.

True that. I was the same until my first gear fix, now it's a priority. I do like that my Jimny still has more when I'm up near 130km/hr, not that I do that often.

Meanwhile when in the hell did shep get a Jimny? I guess I should actually pay attention here and read more rather than just the sales and the pics thread...

Do you still have your Sierra?

So my jimny has gone from about 20ltr per 100km to 11.75ltr per 100km in the same driving conditions. Very happy with the results.

I miss so much reduction gears on the motorway... The Jimny really struggles to break the 4000 rpm barrier, and still doesn't rev up quick enough.

It's the same history of first high being equal to second low. But on 2nd low the Jimny is so stronger and revs up really fast untill 3rd low (or 1.5 high).

And working in that max torque zone you have to step your foot much less and the ECU sends less fuel the Jimny is more economical.

One day i'll have the money to spend...

cheers

Has anyone had a look at what is needed to modify a manual transfer to a auto one(internally)?
I had a look at the different parts on partsouq (but it isn't complete), looking at the price of the gears which are listed
looks like it might be a cheap option as well.

How long did it take you to do this shep? Is there any new seals involved and could you pop up to darwin and do mine for a carton or 2? :-)

I doubt it took a hour. If you want to have a drive of mine before spending the cash I will be going to Darwin mid next month.

Hey Shep thanks for the 'test it out' offer I've just scored one from QLD and should be here in about a week I guess so guess I'm committed now.

Guessing again that if it took you an hour I should be OK to do it in about a day :)

Things like "marking slip joints etc" could throw me. Would prefer to do it myself though so I could revert back if i had too.

Cheers

If its as easy as a sierra transfer theres nothing to worry about. Marking slip joints refers to marking both sides of the driveshaft (at the slip joint ad putting them back the way they came apart, so nothing vibrates from my understanding.
