Post subject:  Jimny JX + JLX Power steering

Hello all,

I'm in the market for a Jimny to update my drover to something a bit more modern.

The JX in all years is considerably cheaper than the JLX, and as far as I can tell the only thing i would miss from the JLX is the power steering. Someone let me know if I'm wrong here.

I test drove a 2005 JX today, and although i have a feeling the front tyres were a tad flat, the steering effort was quite considerable. Either way id prefer power steering.

So my question is, if i get a JX, is swapping on the JLX power steering as simple as bolting on the power steering pump, steering box and lines?

Do you need to swap the JLX crank pulley as well? is there any sort belt ilder that needs changing/adding? how is the power steering pump driven?

I understand the G series power steering lines are different to the M series engines.

Just i might ring around some wreckers and get some prices on all the gear I need for the power steering and see if its cheap enough to just buy a JX and do the swap shortly after. As if its only $500 or so, then that's worth buying a cheap JX I reckon.

on a side not, having never driven an M13 with VVT, man you can really feel when the VVti kicks in. Nice little engine that's for sure. Impressive for 1.3L.

Guessing your in QLD then.
I haven't actually been in one, but as far as I know JX models have no:
* Carpet
* Power mirrors
* Power steering
* Power windows
* Central locking??

All I can think of at the moment, there might be more.

Yer i am aware of what the differences are, the only one i care about is the power steering. (and the A/C! which both jx and jlx have)

my question is more about what is required to swap JLX power steering to a JX.

I would say the only thing you would need is the same engine model power steering pump to suit that engine. and you would need a new belt as the ps and ac share the same tensioner.

I have a JX. Mine has carpet. The only real differences that I know of are no power steering, power mirrors and power windows and central locking as someone said above. I go the SuziOne down the Gold Coast to instal power steering. It cost me one grand for the labor and parts. So far its the best thing I have had done!

From what I understood they have the bracket and everything there you just need the donor parts (which SuziOne got of a wrecked one) and it went straight in. I'm sure someone coulkd probably give a more detailed explanation about what is exactly needed though!

Thanks for the replies. I got a quote from some wreckers at the Gold Coast (found him on gumtree wrecking a few jimnys) and he quoted me $695 for all a complete power steering setup for an m13a. I thought that price was pretty good.

Dave, that's about normal price for a later model P/S setup. I did score a 2009 Jimny P/S box for the LJ for $320/350 (can't remember which), but that was without the pump and lines (I didn't need them).
