I've got the dreaded timing chain rattle happening on my V6.
Has anyone else changed theirs them self?
I'm wanting to know what parts I need to order.

kenn on here recently got his changed but you don't want to know the cost. after servicing many v6 vits there is a little 'procedure' you can do to minimise the rattle.

pour some nulon oil flush in the motor and run for half an hour.
drain, and i mean let it drain for about 20 min.
new filter and use either castrol magnatec or castrol synthetic with 1 litre of moreys oil stabiliser.

you will notice it gets quiet straight away, and after a few days it will get even better. if it was bad to start with you may have to repeat it again about 2 weeks later. if you want the rattle to stay away for good use this procedure every time at intervals of no more than 8000k's.

Yes, they have 4 timing chains , and the parts alone are about $1000 with all the seals and gaskets .

Another nail in the coffin for the GV, the days of my name being on the rego papers are seriously numbered (Will I get banned for having unholy thoughts about a dual cab ute?)

Mines only got a slight rattle but it's not getting better.

Oh, and thanks joeblow. I'll be trying option B first.

If it's any consolation, my timing chains rattled for over a year, and in that time they got thrashed towing my tradie trailer every day in crappy Melbourne traffic.That's about 50.000 kms and the bits that came out weren't that bad considering the noise they made

I was thinking of a Mahindra actually, or maybe a Ssangyong

What part flogs out and causes the rattling to start?
I've changed the oil every 5000km (decent quality mineral oil), but it has been driven pretty hard at times too.

The guides wear out when the tensioners stick due to deposites in the oil, hence the oil flush. And I only use synthetic oil Castrol or Mobil 1. The other thing you could try is Nulon engine treatment (Teflon) can't see it hurting. Nulon also make a synthetic oil that seemed reasonable.

What grade oil do you use? I've had 15W40 in it and it rattled all the time. Put 10W40 in it and it was silent. I now put in 5W30 fully synth and it's still silent. I only use fully synth because it's on special at Supercrap sometimes.
