Just put some brand new OME springs in the back of the LWB.

New bushes

Stock shackle

No excessive weight in the back.

The shackle angle is nearly horizontal, and they keep going past horizontal and staying there over bumps.

Anyone had this before? I cant figure out why it happening but its extremely annoying, makes the ride really bad.

A quick fix would be longer shackles but i would rather avoid them if i can.

Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

if they are horizontal your springs are too long you mean vertical right??

Author:  Taff [ Sun Apr 12, 2009 11:09 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

no i mean horizontal.

anyway, i went to take a pic and realised my stupidity. in my hurry to change the springs (doing it before work) i forgot to put the new bush in the chassis end of the shackle. this bush was totally flogged out and essentially made the shackle shorter.

I will put new bushes in there tomorrow morning 8)

Will take a pic tomorrow anyway so you can all laugh at my stupid stuff up

And here i was thinking ARB must have given me some special extra long springs :P

Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

So i replaced the bushes and its still doing it.

just to clarify:

New OME springs
New bushes
Stock length shackles
Shocks are not the problem

At ride height shackles are sitting a bit lower than 45 degrees, with any bounce on the car they go past horizontal and lock up against the chassis.

Will get pics once camera gets some charge into it.

Seriously seems like the springs are too long, however afaik OME only make one length for the rear.

is there a part number on the spring? maybe your car had a
F.U.R conversion.

yeah, they are a tad long. to much for even the front bush to flogged out.

Check the code on the spring & I think ya might find they are a stuff up.

Shit eh. Did you end up replacing the bushes that you forgot to change?

Only numbers on the springs are

CS038 this might be longer as it goes under the axle housing. Cant read it fully.

How do the main leaf lengths compare to your old springs?

Author:  Taff [ Mon Apr 13, 2009 3:32 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

similar if not the same.

the old springs were OME heavy duty, but i totally destroyed them with axle wrap... pulled to many leaves out aiming for a softer ride. Gears+1.6 killed them no worries :D

these are OME med duty.

The answer must lie in the bushes, as that's realistically the only thing that has been changed.

Will pull them all out again this week sometime and check them all.

Can't see how the bushes could make that much difference, that's really odd. Will be interesting to see what you find when you look closer.

check the length with ARB, wouldn't be the first time they have done something like that (wrong spring or made wrong)

generaly springs are not 'made' wrong. first thing, did you take free hight measurements before install? this is a measurement from top of each eye then down to centre bolt. this measurement can be matched to ome spec sheet. then did you take before and after measurements on the vehicle from rim to guard. this measurement can also be used to work out spring specs. this is why ome have a disclaimer on self fits. personaly i have installed that many ome springs and i have never come across this problem. will be interesting to see what it turns out to be.

Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

I'm not dissapointed with the product at all nor am I blaming it. I love my OME springs... this is my third set.

Just a pity you gotta get em from ARB ;)

No i didn't take any measurements on free height. as for rim-guard i didn't care.... i wasn't chasing lift so i wasn't concerned by how much it came up or down.

I'm going to check all the bushes and see what i can find. if nothing shows up i will just extend the shackles by 25-30mm.

measure them from eye to eye centers.
measure them upside down from mainleaf to concrete.

If they are longer than mine i'll swap you. More flex yeahhh

OK i think i might have found a possible cause.

The shackles are not looking too healthy after 20+ years of abuse 8O

What do you guys think?

If i drill some flat bar as shackles would it be fine to use 4mm steel? its only in the back, they will only be stock length.

Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

I could see how that could cause some lateral movement of the shackle and also how you'd flog bushes out but I don't see how that can cause the shackles to invert EDIT well not invert but lock back like in the pic.

Post subject:  Re: new springs inverting shackles

the pictures are doing it a favour.

the holes being elongated like that, the way i see it, are making the shackles about 10-15mm shorter. this is letting them fold back.

Or am i still right off track with this one?
