So I did a little trek through Barrington Tops NP yesterday. Probly some of the worst road I've ever driven on (except some place out the middle of nowhere in northern NSW with skippy and greenzook). Pot holes that you could near make a tough track course out of and corrugations etc etc. It even rattled the nut off my negative terminal on my battery!!!

Anyways, now when driving in a straight line, if I back off the go pedal it pulls to the right. If I then hit the gas it pulls it back straight.

These features are accentuated while cornering or going uphill... And near pant colour changing when the above mentioned are combined.

I am due to replace the heim's in my rear pan hard and should have done this a while ago but I've been stupidly lazy.

Would I be right in assuming that there could be a little slack in the panhard(s), or should I be looking elsewhere??

its not something like a collapsed or failling wheel bearing is it?

Also check your steering damper - when my sierra's one died it was doing all sorts of weird stuff to the steering. I took it off and left it off, not sure if you can run without one on a jimny but its worth testing - only 2-3 nuts, takes under 5mins to remove.

Could be a wheel bearing... There was a little bit of noise at one point which isn't present anymore.

I have a similar issue Tim, when braking hard it pulls me to the left and when accelerating from a stand still it pulls the car to the right

Mine tries to pull to the left on engine braking... hoping the rear end bushes solve it... and yeah, the panhard might be doing it, but I doubt it.

Floater will sort the bearing out... Hopefully it's one of the two... Ah well, will give me time to finish the paint job while I wait for parts lol

Hows the bushes in the rear arms? Sounds like the rear is steering

It's definitely the bearings in the rear... I can shake the wheel fairly easy. Hoping it holds up another 30 kms

Could this be caused by rear castor correction or lack of correction??

Have you checked all the shock mounts and bushings?

don't talk about that... look in my build and you will see what happens to my shocks

i only ask as i thought of it on my way to work.

Haven't had a real good look at the bushes but from a quick gander they look ok.

Castor should be corrected in the rear with the ora arms.

Shock mounts are also good... Had to press a bush back into the rear shock trackside, that was due to me over tightening my lower shock bolt causing it to press the bush onto the diff housing basically

Just get a pry bar and move them a bit, have you had an alinment recently?

I don't suspect the bushes to be rooted anyways they only got replaced a few months ago with some of Bruce's polyblend ones.

There was a sqeaul that I suspected could have been a bearing the day before so at a guess I'd say it's collapsed.

First off I'd get an wheel alignment for all wheels.

If thats all good, check your bearings and what not.

I've fitted a RTC Dampener on mine which absorbs these sorts of things. Jimny is pretty much the only 4x4 with a steering box that doesnt have one.

i reckon it's your wheel bearing's as you suspect Timmy, once i get an alignment done i will be able to start troubleshooting my problem.

Dampeners are just a short term fix that will eventually become a bigger problem.. also try use a dampener on a Jimny without powersteering.... you wouldn't be suggesting it if you had.

Had a better look today....

The rear bearings are up for replacement, although not as bad as I thought...

The problem lies here





Completely snapped the bolt and the eye for the mount on one side... otherside not far from going either.

OOOHH! that happened to me but the eye sheared the bolt and mine was also in the rear end not the front. what kind of bush is that?

Hahaha it was a pretty bad track and I could have been a little more sympathetic, but it was getting late and we wanted to be out before dark as there's a shitload of Roos, wombats and brumbies in the area.

Can I get some advice: - I too went for a bash recently and since my steering wobbles greatly when I break hard as well as when I am driving at about 50kph. I took it to my mechanic who replaced a tie rod end and advised my manual steering box is cactus. If I replace the manual box and additionally install a dampener will it make any real difference to the way the steering was originally? Am I better off taking the hit of trying to find or import power steering kit?

Have you had your wheels ballanced? I thought i was getting the death wobbles but a wheel weight came of and was 40g out

some times on a really rough track the swivel bearings on the king pins compress a tiny bit reducing your bearing preeload. this in turn allows the wheels to wobble.

If it gets a bad wobble under brakes and the wheels are balanced correctly then there's a good chance your rotors are warped. Any pulsing in the brake pedal?
