Hi all. Just got back into a suzi. Bought an 05 jimny and love it. But having an issue with the hubs. All the vacuum side of things is working fine but the actual sliding gear remains engaged when the vacuume hub retracts leaving the hubs in 4wd always. If I pull the hub off and slide the gear back its all good... until I put it in 4wd drive again and it does the same thing. Is this gear supposed to be anchored to the outer section of the hub in some way? It seems that there is nothing to move the actual gear out when the hub retracts. Hope that makes sense. |

Shouldn't there be a spring or something ? Am not familiar with Jimny's but apparently they have a two-way vacuum operated locking mechanism. Reading http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/3117/4wd2wd.jpg, you need to make sure that both pipes are connected and not blocked, on both sides. Make sure all of 4 pipes are operational (suck air) in the right 4wd/2wd mode |

A spring would make sense but from google it would appear that the outer of the hub is a magnet and thats what pulls the collar off of the shaft when the vacuum hub receeds. But mine doesnt feel like its magnetised or if it is its very weak. Can anyone confirm if there is supposed to be a spring pushing against the collar to push it out of gear when the vacuum hub moves out? Has anyone had theirs off and noticed if the collar was stuck hard against the case through magnetism? At this stage I cant figure what is supposed to push the collar back when 4wd is disengaged. I may have to buy another hub but it would suck if I spend the mmoney and its the same. Any help would be appreciated |

There's a spring in it that pushes back against the inner hub to lock it in. From what I can tell the vaccum sucks it back out to disengage 4x4 |

Thanks for that mate. My collar seems to be independent of the vacuum part of the hub. Ie the vacuum part moves back and forth when you switch 4wd but the collar stays in the locked position. I had it off tonight and can see something attached to the collar like a spring or lock ring but as its behind the outer gear I cant see what its meant to do or if it should be attached to the hub in some way. Very frustrating. The other hub looks and feels much the same but it works correctly. Still scratching my head about this one. |

I was having a vibration through the body at 100kph so I tried to turn the front propshaft and sure enough 4wd was engaged despite being in 2wd. Turns out that was not the reason for the vibration but thats how I found out that 4wd was playing up. The vibration is another issue im trying to solve. |

Assuming it is a button Tcase? Look for cracks or replace the vacumme hose. If its not that, grease your hubs or put FWHs on. |

My suggestion was going to be FWH... Sooner or later the autos will stuff up again... Call it a preventative mod/maintinence |

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I know its headed toward fwh. Just a shame coz I do like the button... call me soft but nothing worse than getting out in mud and rain to switch them. There definitely seems to be some kind of wire/spring attatched to the collar behind the outer gear. I was messing around in there with a screwdriver and it somehow became attached to the hub again. But without knowimg what it does I cant fix it properly. Cant see what it is in the workshop manual diagrams and I dont think these hubs can be fully disassembled. |

Ok problem solved. Pryed the top seal off the hub and it came apart. The base of the collar is attached to the vacuum part of the hub by a snap ring. In my case the snap ring had come out of its groove. So I cleaned, stretched the snap ring a bit, greased and reassembled and now its sweet. Thanks for your replies |
