Post subject:  climbing revs then cuts out on start up help!only fuel pump?

i finally got my drover back together after installing a new water pump, thermostat, second fuel filter and spark plugs...

( i also swapped over my old and tired fuel pump for a secondhand one of unknown condition which seemed to work the same mechanically as the old one outside the car)

and when i turn the ignition after dropping some fuel into the carby it the engine revs hard and climbs to about 2/3000rpms then cuts out...

there is no fuel visibly getting through the lines to the second fuel filter... could it be anything else other than the mystery fuel pump?

just wanna check before pulling it out again...

got the lines on correctly?

sometimes it can take a few goes to get teh pump to prime as well, give it a few goes or try to feed some fuel into the carb to get teh float bowl full

Have you replaced the filter at the tank as it might be blocked. pull the fuel line to the carby off and put it into a small container and crank it over. that will test if there is fuel flow

yep replaced the tank filter, and given it a few goes just doube checked the lines... all on correct... however there is a pipe coming off the bottom of the installed fuel pump that wasnt on the initial one... couldnt figure out what it was for... comes out of the left hole directly below the 'in' fuel line...

There is a rod, in the head, (cam pushes on it to operate pump)
that can slide out and fall on the ground, as soon as You're not looking.
I have been tricked by that before, best to check.

I too have fallen for the old fuel pump rod gone missing trick.

I didn't even know it existed when a friend asked me if i had put it back in.

ahah luckily i didnt have to pull the head apart... just dropped the old fuel pump in works a treat... just need to fix a few more leaky hoses and tighten the exhaust manifold and... heres the kicker...
now that ive got it running smooth and no messy idling... the camshaft pulley is smacking against the housing so it is rubbing and heating up... it stops when it is pushed back towards the head but i cant seem to shift the housing so its not interfering with the pulley... loosened all the visible bolts and retightened them evenly and still it hits... :( anything else i seem to be missing?

you mean the cover? if its the bit behind the pulley there is a rubber bit gets caught in there, if you mean the front bit the rubber bit still gets in teh way and you can put the cover on wrong so it hits but seems like its on right, pull it off and put it back on with less force

if the belt is running off the pulley and rubbing the pulley is probably bent

Mine did that, a new motor was fitted recently.
They had used a rubber gasket that was too thick, in behind the small steel plate that the timing cover bolts to.
It wasn't a problem at 1st, but it slowly warped the cover.

After disassembly of entire timing belt etc,
it was found to be a rubber gasket,
behind the rear piece that timing belt cover fits to.
It was too thick, thus it was slowly distorting the cover,
till it hit the timing pulley.

i seem to have had the same problem as youchistover1 adjusted the gasket and loosened the housing slightly more at the top and no more banging... will have to get proper gasket soon....
is it just me or does your engine always seem quieter and smoother once its back together...?
oh well have fun!
