Hi all.

I recently acquired a 98 Vitara JLX 2.0 litre rag top and have been looking about for info and farkles for it.

Everywhere I look I get conflicting information.

It is the same as a Sierra.
It is the same as all the other Vitaras but not the Sierra.
It is different to every other Vitara.
There is no such thing as a 2l Vitara you must have a Grand Vitara...it will be a V6 not I4...all Vitaras are 1.6.
Someone must have put that engine in privately.
It is wide, thinner, longer, shorter, the same as..... well just about everything and of course nothing.
It will take any wheel off any Sierra/Jimney/Vitara/Grand Vitara except the ones that don't fit.

Bull bars, winches, lift kits, [insert farkle here], yeh mate it will fit every model.....oh I've not seen one of them before, is it an import......

So.....

Can anyone please tell me what will fit and what will not?

Mate, ur car is nothing fancy. More than a few of those on here. No, its not a sierra and far from it. Its similar to the earlier model vitaras, you have a different chassis (slightly wider to allow for 2L engine), bigger engine and gearbox etc. most of the bits from a 1.6 should fit (item specific).

Pretty sure yous will be a sv420. Most suspension kits will fit, you can buy bullbars to suit (not arb tho) winches (nothing about winches is car specific), diff ratios will be different but not hard to find. Be more specific in what u want to know?

If you do a search on this site you will find information about SV420 Vitaras. They aren't as common as SE416 Vitaras but they aren't all that special. There are a few build threads on here you can read to get all the information you need to customise/fix/service yours.

As above a lot of stuff is transferable from other Vitara models - some stuff isn't. The main thing is to recognise what model you have and do some research as pretty much every modification you could imagine has been done before.

PM me the chassis number and I will look up the details for you.

If it's a convertible, there were two type available in 98 the SV420 (Vitara) and the SQ420 (Grand Vitara), both had the same J20a 2.0 litre inline four, also available in 98 would have been the SV620, with the H20a 2.0 litre V6, but as far as I know, that only came in the 5 door.

As the others have said, you most likely have the SV420.

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like it is a SV420, this will help me search.

What I am after right now is knowledge. I will look at the builds etc. to see what can be done.

So far all I have done is fit a Wouxun UV920P UHF and fill a toolbox with a air pump and snatch strap etc.

Whoever told you that it is the same as a Sierra is an idiot, don't talk to them again.
Whoever told you that there is no such thing as a 2L i4 Vitara is an idiot, don't talk to them again.
Whoever told you that it must be an import is an idiot, don't talk to them again. (Except of course that all Japanese cars are imports, but let's not confuse things, hey?)

Broadly speaking:
Gen 1 (SE) - 1.6L 4cyl, SWB/2dr = carb, LWB/4dr = EFI
Gen 2 (SV) - 2.0L, SWB/2dr = 4cyl, LWB/4dr = V6. Wider chassis and wheel track, factory plastic flares, 16" wheels, bigger brakes, interior update, minor tweaks to some stuff but lots of parts interchangeable.

Gen 3 (SQ) - Grand Vitara, 1.6, 2.0, 2.5 motors, 2.7 in the XL7... new body, new interior, blah blah blah. Not much cross-compatibility.

Wheel stud patterns and centre bores were the same through to the first GVs, but sizes and offsets varied.

Heaps of info on here, so have a read and then ask any specific questions you need to. We're mostly pretty friendly here if you've gone to the effort before asking stupid questions.
