I ran mine with 235s and 50mm for years with standard gearing and got by, but it did need a bit of trimming. The driving experience will be tiring and uninspiring and off-road will require a lot of mechanical sympathy. I didn't realise how bad it was until I sorted my gears for the first time.

But buy 235s anyway and deep rims while your at it so you can get them fitted, realise your mistake and sell them cheap...

Exactly what trimming did you do?

Sideways and Zuke are on the money with going the 215's. For no other work required to your vehicle and reliability it'll be your best/cheapest option. I have the BFG KM2 on mine with stock standard suspension, factory mags and stock gearing. 30 000 kms so far and they are going great.

About the only issue you'll find is that the muddies will dig quite hard when going through really soft sand. It's not that you'll get bogged but the front tyres will keep wanting to claw it's way from one side of the rut to the other. Mud and rock work are no problems. On steep rocky/muddy descents I've found that you'll only need very light braking occasionally to keep good control over it.

As it's my daily highway runner it's a compromise to have the comfort and economy on-road with the ability to try and keep up with the big boys on the weekend.

Another option may be to stick with your highway tyres and chuck the money on lockers. Ask Eldo, he'll tell you how far they can take ya.

Hi all I want to get some muddies for my jimny but I will only be using them for weekends when I go off roading. I like the BFG Muddies however I am not sure what size to buy. My criteria: -Gearing must be functional on the road -I don't mind a little rubbing, the car will be 2 inch lifted but I will not chop guards. -I want them to have good traction on anything from sand to mud -I will also need to get a second set of rims (thinking sunrasias) I am open to any suggestions and ideas! If you don't want to effect gearing, go for 215's I ran them on my Jimny. I have 3" lift and get scrubbing with 30's

If I was only running the 235s on the weekends I go driving, do you think they are bearable? Exactly what trimming did you do?

With big tyres, The 99% of the time you are on the road the gearing will be fine and tyre scrubbing will be minimal. The 1% when you are offroad enough to need 235 mud tyres on a Jimny the gearing will be at the practical limit of usable on steep climbs/descents and any tyre scrubbing is going to be worse as the vehicle articulates to its limit. It is in an off-road situation where you need your vehicle to be set-up right.

The inner lip of the rear 1/3 of the front flares as a minimum, you'll probably get away without having to trim the rear. PM Brindog, he used to run 215 and swap to 235 when heading bush.

Ask Eldo, he'll tell you how far they can take ya. i only just replaced the old HT 215/75-15s with rto3 hankooks, those HT's took me everywhere with careful wheel placement and the magic button
