My leaf springs have a little surface rust between them because they're always put through mud then cleaned then sand etc etc, and i heard once you were supposed to lube them or something so they don't wear too much? Also i think they make some noises which may be caused by rubbing.

What kind of stuff should i put on them? I found a can of Silicon Spray and jacked the car up so they separated and sprayed that everywhere. Is there better stuff to use? Does it matter?

hey mate, i've eben looking into this as well, and grease/silicone spray are suposed to be alright for a quick fix, but not much longetivity due to being able to be washed off etc... I've heard of people painting there springs (spliitting the pack and spraying each individually) with a anti friction paint? i believe it is a commercial paitn of some description, sorry i can tbe much m ore info then that!

I once mixed a heap of graphite powder into some paint and painted each leaf with that dunno if it made any difference but it made me feel good

you can get some grease in there with a knife or spray some stuff in there but it'll just wash off anyway, I think just cleaning em well with high pressure is the best way

sure the noise isnt coming from the bushes?

I have also tried slopping and squirting a variety of lubricants in the area without longterm results.
Only one of mine is noisy at the moment, and I think it is the bush rather than the spring.

yeah it's probably due for the bushes to be replaced or greased again, but thought i'd spray stuff everywhere for the moment anyway

get some greasable shackles, might be dear but they are worth it cause you just pump more in

after spraying stuff everywhere and loosening the shackles it was still making bad noises when moving forward and back and jaming the brakes on. I found one the U bolts on the diff wasn't very tight, so tightened it up and the noises went away. So there ya go, half a can of silicon spray and half a can of wd40 later

That is Ok Steve, But if you use the other half cans on the other side without checking the u Bolts first that is when you will get picked on.

Anyway you were eliminating all other possibilities first and there is nothing wrong with that. GOOD WORK
