Post subject:  99 GV Rear Axle Leak / Issues- Advice on Repairs (Perth)

Hi All,

I am new to this forum having recently purchased a 1999 GV 2.5L 5spd.

I am very happy with the car which is unmodified and seems to have been well maintained, and only has 150k on the clock.

Recently got it serviced and it turns out the rear axle (main seal) is leaking badly and has contaminated the brake shoes/ drums. The local mechanic reckoned it would be a big job to fix it, requiring special tools (that he didnt have). and i may need to replace the brakes too.

Can anyone reccomend a mechanic in Perth that I could approach to get it looked at / repaired? Are there any suzuki wreckers that i could get an axle / diff from???

I have limited mechanical knowledge myself, so dont know if its a matter of taking the axle apart, replacing a seal, or replacing the axle/diff etc.....

Will it damage the car driving it around in its current state?

Any advice and help is much appreciated!!!!

Cheers

Pete

Suzistore in midland will do it and I cant see why it would be a big job. The diff will eventually run out of oil so either get it fixed very soon or keep topping up the oil

Any decent mechanical workshop should be able to repair it
you should just have to remove the axle , replace the seal and maybe the bearing ,and brake shoes , maybe the drum

in saying that there can be a bit of time involved in doing that

Suzistore in Midland would be worth getting a quote from , as would any diff specialist (wadiffs , final drive)

where in Perth are you ?

Sounds like its just the outer seal, pretty common failure, To change it its just pull the axle and replace the seal no more than an hour MAX. If you are doing the bearings on them as well you will need a press to get them on and the old ones off. diff and axles should be fine as long as there is still oil. A small amount of oil goes a long way so it probably looks worse than it actually is. Drums and shoes will burn off the oil that gets in it but most should be leaking under it and not affecting the breaks. Breaks shouldn't be hard either if they are needed. You are best off doing the breaks, seals and bearings on both sides while its all apart. That and getting just the rear seals is difficult as they mainly only come in a kit with the bearings.
