| Post subject: | Distributor/ cam problem |
So finally broadcasting my problems of late I had been having problems with timing and carby in the last month, got the carby sorted (i hope) but the distributor seemed to be the prob with the timing. It all came to a holt the other weekend when it refused to start after making a weird sound, whilst down at the servo. (luckily zukchik's ute came to the rescue haha) After pulling it to pieces the rotor button wasn't turning while cranking. The distributor cog had a big chunk out of one of the teeth. The shaft movement of the distributor was about 8-10mm so i figured that it must of jumped a cog taken a chunk out of the tooth and then sat in that position and not been connecting with the cog on the camshaft causing it not to start. Easy... get another distributor... got a good s/h one, checked over the cog on the camshaft...looked fine no marks or anything...beauty. Put the new distributor in, roughly set timing, start it up..makes a weird grinding noise, turn off, pull distributor out and a tooth has a chunk out of it on the new distributor. Check camshaft cog again, is perfectly fine So I am unsure of where the problem lies here, doesnt seem to be obvious camshaft movement, new distributor doesnt have movement, housing looks alright. Really hoping it isn't a bent camshaft, any ideas/thoughts/suggestions? |

spin it over with the dizzy housing off to see if the cam is spinning true? I reckon if its enough to snap teeth you would see it |

Have spun it over slowly a few times and it seems to be spinning true, only had the calibrated screwdriver to test it lol but no huge movement. |

Ok so i got a bigger screw driver and a hammer and the camshaft slides back and forth. Had bit of a look through the manual and can't seem to work out how the camshaft is held in |

Camshaft is held in by the rocker assembly. Pull the rocker cover off and check the rocker assembly. If it's sliding back and forth I'm guessing your rocker assembly and camshaft bearings are going to be stuffed, so you'll be up for a new rocker assembly, camshaft and camshaft bearings. |

Problem still not solved. A local head builder said the dist housing holds the cam in place, so i'm at the point of trying a new housing to see if that somehow is the problem. I'll get pics of the dist cog tonight just for Damo haha |

Ok well seems it was the distributor housing that was the problem, when the orginal dist was stuff it must of stuffed the housing aswell! Now just to get it to start after 2 months haha |
