Post subject:  Pictures of LWB Chassis
Hi all,

I'm new to here and pretty much know nothing on Suzuki bits, so please help me out. We (my son and I) are looking to build something a little different (probably not to you guys looking at this forum.. which I must say is fantastic) and my friend has offered me his LWB Suzuki Ute. I'm not even sure of the year or model but it looks to be similar to be the same as monley's ute. I have done some searching on here and found a couple of pictures (see below.. hope monley and Mitchie don't mind?) Mitchie's ones is mainly like the ones I'm after but monley's looked too cool not to put in here :) I would really like a heap more if possible? Mainly looking for any in stock form without the body/cabs and trays please and pictures from all angles and even from above if you have them :)

Gidday Zookiebrat,

Since you are in Rockingham, how about giving Monley a buzz- and see if you and your son can drop in for a look and to pick his brains.

He is working a FIFO roster - so with a bit of luck you could arrange something.

If that doesn't work out, there are several others around that can give you pointers so you don't end up re-inventing the wheel.

I happen to have a spare 1996 lwb widetrack chassis in the shed not doing much if one was to require such things ;)

Gidday Stephen and thanks for your help. I have already been talking with Monley (Andrew) a fair bit, as I’m buying those rims he has for sale. Andrew’s build is way about the level we are planning to go but I’m certainly keen to see his setup in person. Those bloody FIFO workers… can never get hold of them. Might just mention that I am one of those guys too.

Where in Perth are you located MrRocky? And is the spare chassis you have in this picture?

Im in ballajura north of perth.
Might i ask why it is you want to do such a comprehensive build for perth.
There is not really any track in perth you cant drive on a well setup leafy lwb and 31-32" tyres including tj/bobs hill down south.
You run the risk of building a car that is likely to get a yellow sticker or spend more time in the shed than out on the tracks.
Ive had 5-6 lwbs now and wheel with quite a few at present, yet to find anything that cant be driven with mild lift, tyres, lockers and gears.

On my phone ATM, but have a look through hooki's lwb build, should be a few good shots in that with no cab, but with running gear. Plus it's a super neat build. 8)

Umm.. sorry if I have lead you astray but I didn’t say I was building anything “comprehensive”. The build will be revealed in due time but due to working away, I’m trying to work out some of the details without having the vehicle next to me. The vehicle will be mostly used on the beach, as we love our fishing and camping. Although the sound of some diff lockers would be good :)

And what are you doing with the spare chassis that you speak of? and is it the one in the picture you posted?

Was there something specific you are trying to workout from the images ? If there is, chances are someone will be able to give you the answer.
Or were you simply after ideas ?

Mainly ideas and looking at the configuration and lay out of all the drive line. The Ute my friend has offered still has the cab and tray on it and as I'm still away at work, I'm trying to image it with out the cab and tray. So I thought the best way was to ask the experts :) I'm going to be using a completely different engine config and was trying to see how the transfer box connected to the transmission and also how the steering box was positioned.

I've also asked my friend what year this one is and he thinks somewhere between 1983 and 1986. Does this sound right and if so what model do you refer to this one as? I'd be interested in diff lockers, so what would you recommend? Don't need top of the line stuff, as this is mainly going to be used for beach work and pulling a camper through the sand/boggy stuff.

hooki's beast is definitely one to look out for and seems like these's quite a few over here in WA. I haven't really looked out for them that much but I'll be watching out for them a lot more nowdays.

Sorry atari4x4 :( even though I live in Rockingham (Bogan capital of Australia), I'm not going to use anything that old. We are going to fit something a little more modern and with a bit of puff behind it.

You can fit up to 2001 model 1.6 and even the later jimny engines.
The reason no one stuffs more powerful engines in is because generally there heavy and they destroy diffs, transfers and chassis haha.
About this point someone normally says just buy a hilux, zooks are only 900kg you run the risk of creating a heavy unstable bucket of poo if u get your engine choice wrong

Fully understand what you mean MrRocky and I already have a 100 Series V8 which does me just fine but this Suzuki was given to us at the right price of $0

It's a Father/Son project that I'm happy to put some money towards, as long as it's done right and not just throwing wasted dollars at it, thus the reason to join this forum and asking questions first.

I was once young and silly and wasted a lot of money on cars, which I'm sure is part of growing up :) I'm just hoping to help my son learn not to be wasteful.

If you're looking for details of the chassis arrangement, you should be specific, as the LWB (eg Maruti) has a different rear chassis to the factory tray (eg Zooky08's ute). The body mounts and fuel tank location differ, and if you're thinking of fabricating something, then you might get a surprise if you're basing your plans on pics of the wrong vehicle.

Ok thanks. I'm still not sure as to the model or year, as I'm away at work but my friend seems to think it's either an 83 or 86 model and it has the aluminium tray on the back. I'm not sure what Maruti is? So I guess it will pay just to wait and see what model I have.

Maruti are the indian made sierra... Sierras are japanese made.

Marutis have a few oddities compared to NT or WT Sierra (they have parts from both).

You can get narrow track and wide track. They are easier to convert to later model suzuki engines though than earlier model lwbs

Can you tell from looking at them? or VIN?

Widetrack means wider diffs/spring spacing in turn a wider track/stance/stability
The chassis is still relatively the same yours being an eary model will be n/t you can however convert w/t diffs to fin a n/t with minimal welding.
