Changed fuel tank. Can't start my car

Post subject:  Changed fuel tank. Can't start my car
So I put a nasty crack in my fuel tank on my sierra.
Got a replacement and hooked it up all easy and pretty straight forward. But now I can't seem to start the car. Obviously it isn't getting any fuel but I'm not too sure how to overcome it and get the fuel flowing.
Any tips or how should I get the fuel pumping to the carb? Super frustrating me!!

You can help the carb suck fuel by blocking airflow, just hold your hand over the carb when cranking.

I'm told there is a filter on the pickup in the tank that can block also.

Just going on heresy there, I can't recall who said it, but I heard it on here. I haven't had the tank apart, it seems strange to me too, but stranger things have happened.

Try priming it first.

Just done a search. There isn't.

People were finding they can still block though.

Okay that's good to know. Well it is a seccond hand tank but i gave it a solid clean out.
I'll try to get fuel through the line tomorrow by blocking the airflow. Hopefully that'll get it going.

If anyone thinks of anything else please let me know!!

Down the side with the choke flap. Spay bottle should be fine. Don't stand near the carb when you crank it over, Just as a precaution.
And please don't spray petrol and crank at the same time. 8O

Alternatively you could use 'start ya bastard' 'aerostart' etc

If everything is working fine though, the pump should suck fuel up the line and fill the carby bowl. Should take a bit longer than usual to start, but it should eventually start. You should not need to spray petrol or propellant down the carby. Id expect if you need to crank it more than about 20 secs before you get a fire out of it, then something is wrong.

You sure you hooked up the pipes at the back correctly? I think some of the pipes on the tank do not go to the bottom of the tank (vents etc), so if you have hooked up your fuel pump line to one of these lines, all you will do is suck air.

Something is wrong if you can't get the car restarted.

Sounds like you could have a blocked pickup or a pump or filter that needs attention. I have found a partially blocked filter or almost dead pump will run fine when primed but won't get fuel to the carby with slow cranking.

You could try removing the fuel hoses from the pump and blow down them. You should be able to blow air and hear bubbles in the tank.

That's what I thought should happen, but I was cranking the car for a while. Pumping the accelerator trying everything I could from inside the car.
Then stopped and repeated. All the lines are correctly attached. The main line can only go on one outlet as it's the one screw in pipe. Then there is 3 other pipes. One large, medium and a small. All of which can only attach to one outlet.

I think I'm just have trouble getting the fuel through the line. Because I ran it without fuel and obviously sucked it out off the lines, which wouldn't help at all.

I'm sure nothing is wrong or blocked. Just didn't want to crank it for too long and got frustrated and gave up.
I'll be double checking everything today. :/

Okay good idea, I'll check to see if I can get it going and if not see if the pipes are blocked. What a pain.

If a breather line isn't connected somewhere could that stop fuel being sucked through the line to the carby?

Nope, nothing. I have a secondary inline fuel filter in the engine bay and it's dry.

Got it going! Woo finally after rolling around in the pouring rain, soaked grass and mud with bits of mud and crap falling onto me I figured it out to be a very simple fix! The main fuel line wasn't completely tight all the way so it was sucking air rather then fuel.
Tightened it all up (which I have no idea how you would do it without a body liftby the way) and cranked it over a couple times and then started easy!

Here's one.

My KTM started running rough, progressively worse till it woulnt start.

I rebuilt the top end, checked timing, pulled the flywheel off to check the seal (didn't bother changing it), cleaned the carb.

I just about burned it. The ignition coil had come loose.

I did the same thing once while trying to sort out the "timing" on a freshly built 308 once :? I stripped the top end down twice.

Well I'm glad it was just that and not something ten times harder or expensive to fix.
Very greatful! Next time I'll just be triple checking things.

Ps speaking of ktms. I rebuilt the top end on my 250 exc, cleaned the carby and cleaned up all the connections. Fresh fuel, new gearbox oil and 40:1 mixture for the two stroke oil. And I still fouled my spark plug after about a hour and a half of riding!

You'll have to rejet your carburettor assuming everything else is fine, unless you aren't riding it hard.

The changes you'll need to make depend on where its playing up. You could adjust the needle clip or main jet, depending on whether its rich all round or just on top.

Sign up to thumper talk for the best advice, I'm on there and the KTM guys are really helpful.

Try TT first, other guys with same bike should be able to give you advice, you will need to give them elevation, temperature and how high up from sea level you are.
