Hi guys need some help with my 97 Vitara 2.0L 4 cylinder soft top I'm looking for cheap way of lift it as i just put 30's on it was told by a wrecker that if i put Grand Vitara springs in it i would get 1.5 to 2inch lift out of it is this true if so do I also need to run Grand Vitara shocks as well.

i have a heavier engine in mine and I put the thickest springs I saw at the wreckers in (a big pile) I assume they where v6 gv springs. They lifted the front end half an inch (was perfect for me). maybe with a lighter engine it might lift more, but I doubt the back would lift much. I would be interested to know if the GV shocks are much different. Do you know the stock part numbers?

Anyway you cheapest option is bumpstops or body lift. One good thing about body lift if just wanting to guard clearance is that it will normally provide more clearance than suspension lift as you often gain more flex with suspension lift. So unless you change your bumpstops you can gain little or no clearance at full flex. However if the GV stuff does give the lift you are talking about they should also be stiffer meaning less flex and more clearance at full flex.


Your cheapest option is a guard chop!

My understanding is GV springs will provide lift through a higher rate. I've been in a vitara with OME GV front springs and it was too high/hard.

Still more effort cost and drawbacks than a bumpstop spacing and/or a small guard chop. 30's are pretty small. People have been fitting them to stock cars for years without a problem.

Yeah I guess the heavier engine in mine negates that as the front sagged a little with the stock springs. However I often think people running big winch bars etc would have more weight over the front end than mine.

Look into getting stock 2004 grand Vitara springs and shocks for the rear.
I have a set in my 1996 X90 43mm of lift.
The front springs lifted the front by 65mm but it was to far for the struts. and way way to hard a ride.
but use the 2004 GV stock struts as they are 40mm longer then the 96-97 Vitara ones.

Thanks guy for all your help I have fitted the 30's now does scrub a bit when it flexes so might just do a body lift for now and leave stock suspension till i can afford to do it the right way.

GV rear springs don't fit in a Vitara, they don't seat correctly as the top coil is wound tighter.

I have 2004 GV rear springs in my X90 and they fit great!
My X90 has the same running gear as a SWB Vitara!

I don't know about X90's but GV springs don't fit SE or SV LWB Vitara's.

The springs and shocks are out of a 2004 GV. second hand.
I do need to get new shocks for the rear.
I want to get longer ones but I do not kwon what ones to get?

even looks like the top rubber spring seat has been cut to allow it to slide further up the bumpstop can.

The top wind of the coil is too small and isn't sitting square on the coil hat, as predicted.

The coil isn't sitting flush on the coil tower, in fact it looks like it's jamming on the retainer/bumpstop mount some way up. It is OK - well, your experience implies it has been. Does that mean the springs "fit" - no.

Is it possible the springs are being over compressed because they are sitting too high on the mount? Maybe.

Is it likely that you're getting some of your lift because the springs aren't sitting down on the mount properly? Probably.

It's far from ideal. It's not the worst thing I've ever seen, but considering the huge range of actual vitara springs available, I'd suggest it should dissuade any else from trying it.
