jack car up and take out off gear and release handbrake.
undo the 4 17mm nuts in the middle off the hub and then give the tyre a good
wobble until the brake drum comes loose. brake drums can seize onto the axle.
then remove wheel and undo the bolts holding on the brake backing plate, remove
the hand brake cable and the brake lines. i am doing the drivers side on a w/t sierra so
there are two lines.
when all the stuff is undone replace the brake drum back to front and give it a good flog with a
decent hammer, if that doesn't pop the axle out then put the brake drum back on propley and replace
the wheel. the idea is to put the wheel on so that there is a bit off movement and then get a bit rough
and try and leaver out the axle. lucky mine popped out easily which probably had something to do
with the big cracks in the outer bearing race.
hmm don't know why my bearing was noisy
remove the axle from the diff and get a grinder, hammer and some rags.
put a few nicks in the bearing
put a rag over the bearing(bits will go everywhere) and give it a few good hits with a hammer.
remove the broken outer bearing race.
pull the balls
and bearing cage out and you will be left with this.
then you can slip the brakes off the axle and attack the rest off the bearing.
i stick a few nickes in the retainer and inner bearing cage and use a pin punch to knock
them off the axle.
clean the axle up and run a file over any high spots. slip the brakes over the axle and put
the bearing on. the stickieoutie bit off the bearing faces the brakes. a couple off taps with
a hammer and punch will seat the bearing, just be careful not to stove in the side off the bearing.
put the axle on something hard when flogging it with a hammer
get a bit off heat into the retainer, i use a blow torch but an oven on flatout will do
the retainer will still need to be flogged on and this bit really sucks and i think i will
buy a press before i do it again.
remove and replace the axle seal.
slap a bit off glop on the housing, i don't know if it helps keep crap out but it couldn't hurt.
then replace the axle, you will probby need to tap the axle home. then bolt the
brakes to the diff, connect the hand brake, bleed the brakes and stick the wheel back on.
...........everything was good...............except for the cutting of the retainer............
