A bit of background first,

I was on my way home from work when my swb vitara started loosing power, then was coughing and farting and then backfiring occasionally. I pulled over and the car idles fine, but won't rev. I nursed it home and have started troubleshooting it.

I have dropped the fuel tank out and checked the lines and condition of the tank, which is fine. I replaced the factory fuel filter and have fitted a filter between the pump and the carby. When I rev the engine there is a squirt of fuel and it will rev for a second but then it will start to die and I can't see any fuel still being injected into the throat of the car by.

Still the problem persists. However I have noticed that the filter between the pump and carby isn't filling while the engine is running. Matter of fact the filter housing isn't even getting half full.

Now every time I have used this setup in the past the filter housing is pretty much full, so I'm thinking it may be a problem with the fuel pump not supplying enough fuel.

Just wondering if anyone else out there concurs with my troubleshooting?

Next step after this is a carby kit, which I was going to do in the future anyway.

Possibly fuel jets blocked. Possibly fuel pump. Possibly blocked fuel lines in the tank??

First try this.
Check fuel pump.......
Get a jerry can or similar. Run a hose from the fuel in that to the fuel pump. Run the fuel lines from the pump to another bottle. Crank the car over and see if your getting good fuel flow.


Check fuel lines/ filters etc........
Then connect the cars fuel tank to the pump and try to crank fuel into the bottle.


If the above are good it's the carby........
First check that the fuel solenoid is clicking. Ignition on, disconnect and re connect the plug at the front of the carb, mines green. If it's not clicking that would stop your slow fuel delivery.
You'll still get fuel squirting in from the accelerator pump, that fuel doesn't come through the fuel solenoid, But from one of the two fuel lines from the fuel pump. The fuel from that accelerator pump is probably what you described above as fuel squirt.

If all things so far have tested fine, and your happy that the auto choke is operating properly, it's a problem with the fuel bowl. Either the fuel float needle/ seat. Blocked... Or the fuel jets at the bottom of the bowl blocked.
So it's carby cleaning time. Do drain the coolant at least lower than the carby. Don't mix the fuel jets. Primary one is smaller than secondary one. Do crack the Phillips head screws BEFORE you lift the whole carby off the manifold.

Problem fixed,

Fitted a new pump, which gave better visible flow through the filter between the pump and carby, however the car still wouldn't rev. So off came the carby and put a kit through it and cleaned it all out. Had a bit of crap in the bowl so probably blocked the jets.

All back together now and running fine. I guess the pump was on its way out and some of the crap made its way into the car by.
