today i parted with my '91 gq patrol in order to buy a 2000 model jimny.

friend of mine i go exploring with (PanterA) directed me here & said i can't go wrong with the jimny.

i'm excited at getting the jimny (picking it up tuesday), but at the same time hoping i'm not about to make a mistake.

it's a 2000 model JX, everything stock except new arb front bar, rear airbag suspension & under bonnet compressor. 100,000ks on the dial & costing me $5,000.

is this a decent model & a reasonable buy, or is this one of those models with a real history of issues you don't know until you've got it home haha.

I'm pretty sure the main thing to look out for is the death wobble up front. Has it got any lift or bigger than stock tyres added?

Hi buddy like mike 57 said these rigs are very different to Gq's just watch out for the death wobbles and the O2 sensor tends to make the idle drop at lights saying this they are a great rig when done right

Well ... we just traded our only zook in on another Nissan (Wife's 2007 Swift on a 2014 Pulsar, the Swift was too small for us, especially when doing trips to Adelaide)

That being said, If I ever went for a smaller 4WD, I would only look at a Jimny, since they're a proper 4WD. Solid axles.

Can't see that happening anytime soon, I love my big truck.

For $5k, it looks like a pretty sweet car, should be better than the GQ on fuel ... since you're always grizzling about how much it costs to run, GraphicX LOL

@ chop; nah no lift & the tyres are the factory size (intending to run a basic 2" lift & 215 r75 tyres later though).

@ jake; i asked him if it wobbles or carries on when on the highway & he said no so fingers crossed. if it wobbles it can be a pretty daunting thing to fix can't it ? is the o2 sensor expensive if that's got issues ? i know it hasn't had the timing belt changed so i'm up for about $300 early on for that.

@ pantera; i don't 'always' whinge about how thirsty it is, only every other day when it needs refilling lol.

Any ways if you find that it has a wobble there are some things you can do to fix it there's a member on here called zooknutters. He can help with info his great an ideas if you have a question ask it
Knowledge is power as they say . the idle señor is about 100 to 150 bucks .
you have a great bass to start with. That's what's important.

100,000 is pretty low kms for a 2000 model and it sounds like it hasn't been messed up by previous owners so $5000 is a pretty fair price I think.
2000 plate Jimnys are a model change year, does it have airbags? Airbags would indicate the better and more modern M13a engine.

I haven't heard of many people having oxygen sensor issues but crank position and cam angle sensors are a more common fault. These have usually been sorted well before 100,000 but can happen anytime, generally a heat issue I think and probably affected by mud splash coating the sensor. If these are faulty the engine will generally keep running but with poor performance and economy. The issue usually will show up during highway driving. If you can, take a 20 minute drive on the highway, if the engine splutters and cuts out it will most likely be one of these two sensors.

Why chop the guards and why choose a tyre that's not a popular size, eg; hard to find and more expensive because it's not common.

Your right. I 225 was a typo. Was more thinking along the lines if the op was stressed about death wobble he could just keep it stock height and run the 215 75's and if he has to chop a little out the guards

@ nutter; no airbags, so unfortunately would be the older build i'm guessing.

he listed it as a JX, but it has carpet, aircon, power steering, power windows, keyless entry so that would make it a JXL or something wouldn't it ?

so i ended up buying it last night, no death wobbles or issues with the idle at stopping (thanks for the tips btw). drove it home & it went pretty good. averaged 8.79 litres to 100ks which is fairly short of the 6.5 that it states on carsales.com.au but i can live with that.

everything seems to work great except for the brake lights. i've checked the fuse & that's fine, will check the bulbs tonight but i've got a gut feeling that it'll have to be something more along the lines of a bad earth/connection somewhere or maybe even the switch on the pedal. does any one have any thoughts on what else it might be ?

If it came with a roadworthy certificate the brake lights should work, I'd ask seller to sort that.
No airbags is definitely an early Jimny but at least you get a cool extra glovebox.
Nobody ever gets the fuel economy stated from a manufacturer.
Definitely a JLX with those features unless they've all been added later. Does it have roof rails?

yeah has the roof rails, intending to get the racks to go left to right at some point.

we don't do roadworthy certificates in SA, basically we're encouraged to drive unroadworthy cars so the government can raise extra revenue with fines lol.

great work buddy sounds like you have a great starting base must say check the papers on the car or the car placard
as it sounds like you have a JLX not a JX as mines a JX i have aircon but no power windows (thank god) and power steering

With roof rails as well it's definitely a JLX, nobody would go to that much trouble to swap a JX to JLX spec.
