Looking at a second set of wheels for the XL-7

The issue is the brake caliper so generally steel wheels wont work as the mounting face of the rim needs push the wheel out enough so the spokes or whatever dont hit the face of the brake caliper.

I dont want to use spacers, so what have others got to support larger wheels?

Will going say a -13 offset push the wheel out enough to make room for the brakes.

No.

As yet no one has found a steel rim that will fit. Moses's Dick Cepek's fit, however.

My plan is to buy a few -13 steelies for the trailer so I can swap the rears around and only need to carry a single spare when on a trip.... unless you have more luck finding cheap rims that fit.

Been a big headache for years. Hate being on 27inch wheels and they look so small in the large wheel arches of a GV then there is also the regulations in SA that are behind everyone else and leaves no options other than a crappy AT tire.

The max wheel size listed for the GV and XL-7 in USA is 235 70 R16 but because its not listed here cant have it on the car.

Thinking 235 70 R17 which is ok in eastern states but no in SA.

So the rules in SA still haven't been updated to match the other states?

I looked into slightly larger tyres for my Feroza about 7 years ago, it was ridiculous what tests were suggested by the engineer to do it legally. (eg. Slalom, braking efficiency - fair enough- but, "drive by noise" and emissions WTF?)

You also see so many 4WD's over here with large oversized tyres, some to ridiculous extremes driving around with full on mud tyres around the city. Probably none done legally, but the Police don't pull them over.....

Yeah i know, all the documents go back to 1999 or 2010 the VSB14 has not been adopted which allows exemption for 4x4's to a 50mm suspenion/body increase in height and 50mm rolling diamter increase on the tyre. Its been adopted by most states as far as i know some go even further.

You most likely wont be pulled over if driving sensoably, but i dont have money to waste if got defected for such a minor change. Really i think its beyond stupid a increase the thickenss of your thumb is not allowed. I think A rolling diameter of up to 50mm is quite sensible with out any certification anything over that should be a cheap method of getting it approved eg tire vendor or mechanic to check clearances etc.

For being in a state that NEEEDS clearance and being stuck on unsafe tractionless bridgestone 27" wheels im finding it a little anoying :)

You should be going as narrow an H/T as possible with your anal economy tactics! Why do you need different rims to get an aggressive tyre? Man up and put a taller tyre on the XL7 rims :wink:

Yep no standard (and very few specialty) rims fit the GV/XL7 without caliper grinding or a shim/spacers, the on'y ones i know of that work are the DC2 and another Dick cepek one but that has +'ve offset so no point. Unfortunately they are 16x8 with is barely do able on a 245 let alone a 235... a 5mm shim will allow standard cheap steelies to fit over the calipers if you are willing to do that or grind the calipers. you can easily run 225/75 without getting looks its when you go over 31s that look big on a zook. Also the -offset isn't what helps to fit over the calipers you would need something like a -25 to get it to work and even then if thats just around the hub it could still curve the spokes back in and still have the same problem

31's don't look big in my GV but that's because ive kept it as low as I could and made them fit without doing the BL that everyone running this size tyre end up doing.

I'll be going to 31s without BL when my 29s wear out ;) still tossing up between 245/75 and 265/75 but I'm leaning to the 245s to limit the headfuck 265s would be on a daily

245's are way easier...... converted size is about 30.6inch
